lovable gas guzzlers!

Man , I really like to take a cruise in my old truck, but lately the old lady is saying why should we take that big truck?It gets terrible gas mileage!lets take the little car.I just go along and say OK your right it doesnt make sense to drive the really cool big old gas guzzler, lets just drive the crappy little 4 banger instead.She says OK.while walking away from my old blue 72 I seem a little discouraged . lets face it $2.50 a gallon for the low grade fuel. Truck gets 9 MPG downhill with the BB.Little crappy 4 banger gets around 30 MPG. do the math.seems like the short trips have become real short trips in my truck lately.When will the relief (prices) ever come down?I am thinking of putting a freekin sail on my truck!That would be cool with a big chevy bow tie on the sail.I better hurry and patent that one eh!

Face it - gas prices are NOT coming down! EVER!

Either learn to live with it or find a way to make the truck use less. I remember a magazine article a couple of years back where they got about 20 mpg with a 383 in a K10. I wish I had kept that magazine because I often try to remember exactly what they did. I don't think it was anything radical. They bought parts from Summit and put it together. I think the truck had a 4 speed manual tranny and that likely helped some. It was an 85 or so truck and they were looking for power and economy on a trailer towing rig. It was not injected so one might do even better with a transplant of a newer engine with electronic controls.

Or maybe a diesel?

Gas Hog

You think you got it bad try paying $5.50 for 111 octane gas.Thats all i can run in my 1969 chevy truck with a 468 BBC 12.5 to 1 compression.This sucks but i love the power and the truck so i'll deal with it.Just take a short cruise by your self so you can be happy again .

The only thing I have to drive is my truck so I'm used to shelling out around 2.29 a gallon. Most of the time I never have enough money to fill it up, I just put gas in when it gets right below empty.

I justify it by not having a car payment every month.

You can buy a fair amount of gas before you'd reach what you'll spend making that payment.

I thought I was going to get better mileage with my Gear Venders Overdrive tranny. But it stayed the same. It might be because I went from a th350 to a th400. Still about 12.5 mpg. Highway rpms dropped though! But I do love to drive my truck.

I agree with special-K....grin and bear it. My daily driver is a 2500HD Crew with 8.1/Allison that gets 10.5 around town and about 14 highway. Haven't got good reading on the 72 since the spedo is broke, but I'm thinking 11-12 MPG at best.

Saw article in paper last week saying if you adjust for inflation, we are not close to the all time high in gas prices. Again, adjusting for today's dollars, the high fuel price was = $3.08 per gallon in 1982. We are doing okay.

At one point I was getting 16mpg, but lately its been more like 14. My foot is getting heavier.....

This is exactly how I figure it. I may spend alot on fuel, but on a monthly basis it's still less than most car payments.

Though the way it's shot up lately makes me a little nervous. How much higher will it go?

My wife couldn't believe it when I told her I was buying the GMC. "it will cost $6 a day to go to work" she said. Now it costs almost $8 a day. But I don't give a s**t, cause I love my truck. I won't like it when gas goes to $4 a gallon, but I'll still drive my truck. I guess I'm getting stubborn in my old age. But when I'm too blind to drive and sitting in a rocking chair, I won't be looking back at memories of driving a HONDA !!

Mine basically gets driven about once or twice every 2 weeks, one of those trips is the regualar dump run. My hot rodded 6 gets about 10 mpg. Like VTBlazer, I guess I could justify the extra cost because I own all my vehicles outright, but then again, my Bonneville has A/C, power everything and the V6 gets decent mileage, so no need to drive the truck every day.

Cheaper insurance costs also add up. Life is to short to let a good truck sit. People complain about $2.50 gallon gas as they sip on a $1.59 quart of water you know that stuff that falls from the sky? My motorcycle averages 45 mpg so it brings my truck mpg up. I agree with grin and bear it.

I drive mine 3 or 4 times a week. It has 2 saddle tanks and the cab tank.57 gallon capacity total $ 142.50 to fill at $2.50 a gallon.I love driving it . I might nag about cost ( like most everyone else) but I still will always drive it.

I drive my truck up and down the interstate everyday and nothing is going to stop me. I agree with all of you, it sucks, but it is cheaper then a payment. And it puts a smile on my face driving it.

Checked my mileage a couple of days ago....4:11 gears both highway and city driving- semi built 350.....12-13 mpg. Ok i won't whine about it. 67 custom camper--

I am still driving the '68, just not on a daily basis. I have been driving the F-250 which runs on LPG (propane) so I haven't noticed a big difference with it.
