I just bought a '70 stock bore 350 out of a GMC 1/2 ton. I want to build it for grunt/torque and reliabilty. I want to keep it cheap ($500-$700) after machine work.

What would you do?

Are there any stock heads/parts I should be looking for that will flow/perform better from a newer truck?

Vortec heads. However, I am not sure that fits into your budget.

You might want to try something like an Edelbrock Performer cam & intake package.

For some added grunt, do a 383. This might be prohibitive depending on how much you end up paying for the crank and machine work though..

Given your budget, I'd say any really good head is out of the question though. Head work is just too expensive (not to mention buying the heads themselves!)

Go buy a crate 350 for $1300 with a warranty and be done with it. You will have that or almost that in it after machine work and parts if you do it right inexpensively.

ok I know I am about to get flamed but will state my opinion anyway, as I have done this in the past and works great and will do it again. For a budget look for some 305 H.O. heads with 1.94 valves. The cost all relies on how bad the engine is to start with. On a budget I would put a set of speedpro hypereutectic pistons that don't put the compression too high. They are pretty cheap and reliable. Of coarse you find great deals on new pistons on ebay. I would get a good dual plane and q-jet. The vortec heads require a special intake and would really push your budget.
