Difference in dash pads? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Is there a way to tell just by looking at the dash pad what year(s) it will fit? I have come across a dash pad that has been in storage for years for the 73-87 trucks. It has been painted or died brown from blue. It has NO cracks at all. Not even around the speakers. Would like to know what it will fit before I look into selling it.
No pic here at work, but I can take one this afternoon.

73-78 had no VIN hole on the drivers side, 79-80 had VIN hole...otherwise both are identical. 81-87 are all the same, with the pass side being more squared off when compared to 73-80 units.

The easiest way to tell an 81-87 dash pad from the 73-80, is the passenger side dash trim wraps back toward the passenger, while the 73-80 is flat.

The entire passenger side on the 81+ is different than the 73-80...but you are correct as well.

i wonder how hard it would be to remove the brown to have the blue again and if so would it harm the dash?

Check out N2TRUX's vinyl dye instructions. This will be the same application.

I think I should offer a disclaimer here. While I have no doubt that laquer thinner will not effect the plastic (polycarbonate, I think) that is used for trim panels such as door panels, kick panels, etc it's not exactly the same composite that is used for dash pads.

Laquer thinner will leave the pad with a dull finish. If you are stripping the old dye off to re-dye it, then it doesn't matter. If you are thinking you could strip the old dye off and leave the blue underneath exposed don't expect that to work. It won't look very pretty unless you dye it again....

Sorry, I guess I was kinda vague. I was indicating that to dye it blue use the same proceedure, there is no way to get the brown off without affecting the blue.
