Question 1 Ton Rear Brake Drums

Does anyone out there know of a place that sells new 1 Ton rear brake drums for a dual wheel truck. Working on a '68 C-30. I can find 1 Ton single wheel brake drums with no problem, but dual wheel drums are a different story. TIA.

There have been maybe two I have seen for sale in the last two years. I called on both of them and they were sold as soon as they were listed on the internet.
You would be best off taking the drums you have and getting them metal flame sprayed to meet the requirements.
I have to safety my 1 ton dually here yearly... and they measure the drums each time. I have had no luck finding new from someone whose reasonable. I believe there is someone in Pennsylvania re-casting them but he wants about $350 US dollars each.
I have yet to come across any new 71-72 dually drums.
The one listed on the net were from 68, but sold already.

Hey Rod, I never heard of "metal flame sprayed". How does that work and what does it actually do? Also if you or anyone out there has more info on the place in PA, I sure would appreciate it. $350 is way too much, but it wouldn't hurt talking to them. TIA.

Flame spraying has been around a long time, it is a process used in aircraft manufacturing to put an thin aluminum barrier between the electronic in the panels of the wings and the out side of the plane to protect the electronics from lightning strikes.

Its also used in many industries for building up the thicknesses of shafts and rollers , also crank shafts.

Anyway, it's just metal applied to a surface of the brake drum and then machined to the correct diameter. Its tough material and will last a lot longer than cast drums, it is considered a legal automotive repair here. Check out a few machine shops in your area, they will probably be able to advise you.

swapping in a 73-up 14 bolt axle would be a good upgrade, IMO, are better than these axles under our trucks, would be a pretty easy swap also, as long as find one with the 40" spring pad spacing setup(chassi cabs and stakebeds, etc) cant break a 14 bolt, and they dont have the leak amd bearing problems and also brake drums are easy to get for them,

good luck

Yeah you could do that too, then join fast68's anti-drum brake club if you swap the rear end into a disk brake set-up. You can find kits for the newer diffs.
