On the Dizzy...Which one is the number 1?
Hey guys,
This is my stupid question of the day. I've been touching up under my hood and I replaced the wires after paint. I have my Haynes Manual and going by that the number 1 on the dizzy is the first peg to the left beside where the ignition coil comes out(HEI). But I can't get the truck started now so I must have it wrong. thanks, Bryan

If you haven't pulled out your dizzy, #1 always will be the one pointing towards the number one cylinder.
If you have pulled it out, you get the pleasure of resetting the timing

You do realize that there is the firing order to consider as well. It does not go 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 clockwise around the dizzy. Clockwise it goes: 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

#1 should be between #8 and #2. Follow the #1 spark plug wire from the #1 spark plug to the distributor cap.

If you didnt pull the dist.
pull the cap, pull #1 sparkplug turn engine over until #1 compression stroke, look at rotor see which one its point to. any one of them can be #1 if someone time it to be. |

My hei looks different than the one in the Haynes manual. My #1 goes in the dizzy forward of where the engine wiring harness and tach harness hooks up( box shape with battery + and - signs along with tach on there). On the rearward side of the little box terminal or whatever its called should be the #2. Hope that helps.

Take the number 1 plug out, crank it over until you get compression coming out of the hole, and make sure that you can see the timing mark on the pointer, I set mine at 8 degrees. Your rotor should be pointing where you have your number 1 plug wire. If not you need to move it. Make sure you have all the wires in the correct order and that you have 12 volts going to the distributor and that it is firing.

I got to go to work now, still not running. Don't laugh at me when I ask this question. When I painted the motor and firewall and all I left the plugs in. I don't have the funds right now to get new plugs, but would the paint on the end of the plugs have anything to do with it?
Also the hot wire to the dizzy is going the far left slot. When I put it on the other 2 slots I got a little bit of a pop Bryan

mine is where you plug in the coil wire,in the front of that,should be the 3 rd one around from that part going forward,thats just how mine is,it actaully looks like the plug on the top of the cap points at #2,but that is my #1,i tried going to the 2nd one,but that didn't seem to work,if you look at the diagram above in the other post,my #1 is that #8,if that helps

#1 TDC compression stroke....thats all you need to know. after that, you can dump that dist in any old way you want......just make sure you start #1 wire where the rotor is pointing, & you have it "hooked up"! The book puts the wires in 1 spot just for tuneup specs Best of luck..... L

If the paint on the ends of your plugs prevents the bare metal from showing, that's part of your problem. You need to get all that paint off so the metal of the plug makes really good contact with the metal inside the plug wire.
Also, don't try to line it up by putting the #1 wire in a particular position on the distributer - what matters is that the rotor under the cap is pointing at your #1 wire when the #1 cyl is all the way at the top. That could be on the back of the dist. or the side or anywhere as long as the two line up. And once those are lined up you can plug in all the other wires relative to the #1. So after your #1 plug fires the distributer rotor will keep turning and point to the #8 wire, etc. |
