Themostat Help
I was flushing out the radiator by draining the pet-cock and I took off the top radiator hose. The question I have is that if I run water in the therm housing it goes right through the engine. If I fill up the radiator with a hose it will come out the therm housing. If the stat was close shouldnt it block the water off at least one way? could the stat be froze open. I live in texas and it seems to take the truck a while to warm up and on the highway it runs 160 but in town like 190 should there be that much difference. I just bought the truck no idea what temp stat is in it.

It sounds like it is either stuck open or missing.

i agree with larry its either stuck wide open or gone and seeing as how your in texas which stays warm most of the time it probably doesnt have one. you might uncover an overheating issue if it doesnt have one now and you put one in. some people take them out to crutch a clogged radiator or weak water pump

Agree with the Larry and cableguy. Stat is most likely stuck or missing. That would be cause for it to take so long to warm up. The 190 running in town could be from other things. Does it have a fan clutch and does it have a fan shroud? Both of these will have a large effect on how well it cools driving slow and idling in traffic. While 190 is not a bad operating temp you wouldn't want it to go much over 200. Depending on what you intend to do with the truck you may want to look into having the rad flushed and checked out. It'd beat being stranded on the highway with a ruptured radiator.

Do yourself a favor and replace the sts with the flavor you want. after you flushed the cooling engine did you back flush it?
