Power Steering
I'm going to drop a 454 with a TH400 in my 67 and right now it doesn't have power steering, which I think it's REALLY gonna need with the bigger motor. So at the same time I would love to put a power steering box in. What donor cars have a power steering box that will work for me? I think all I need is the box and a new pitman arm (whole front end needs a rebuild, so I might get the PA with a rebuild kit) I was thinking of using the newer style power steering pump. Just curious if I need something different from the norm because of the newer style pump.
Thanks

You will need a long water pump & there are two styles of hoses. Inverted flare type (old style) & oring (later style). Ive got a short/old style pump & hoses for a big block Id sell if you are interested...corn

Thanks for the info and the offer corn. I was actually hoping for info on what vehicles I could get a power steering box out of. The 454 I have is out of a 81 4-door dually. It has a power steering pump on it that I could use. I was mainly asking because I would like to find a used box at the junkyard or something and eventually would like to go with a serpentine belt setup like the Billet Specialties Tru-Trac. I just didn't know if I would have to use a different style box to work with the newer style pump that comes with one of those type kits.
Thanks again

The P/S pump on the newer engine will work fine, that's not the issue. The big problem will be that '67s were different from the later GM trucks because they had power -assisted steering, not the direct power steering that came in in '69. I tried putting a '69 P/S gear on my '67 K/10 Suburban and had a lot of problems, especially with the steering geometry. It wouldn't turn as tight.
PM me for details. I can access some of my older posts on this subject, but don't know of a way to link them to you in this system. People have done it, but it's not a simple bolt-on.

You'll need a steering gear from a truck. Truck boxes mount outside the frame, car boxes mount inside the frame. Good luck and keep on truckin'............Jerry

I almost forgot, the pitman arm for power steering is a different size than the one for manual steering. Good luck and keep on truckin'.........Jerry
