Powertrax Posi Center Section
Are these any good and how hard to install on a 70' with 12 bolt 3:73's?. Thanks

I had one in my '70, easy to install, but I would get the Eaton Posi. I had the Powertrax and it was fine for about a year, then when I'd hammer down on it, it would sometimes loose it's lock. Like slipping into neutral...not good at 5500rpms...spend a tad more and get a better Eaton.

I was thinking I could probably handle the install and it would be cheap. I know the Eaton is the way to go but I would be clueless on setting the pinion depth and backlash. Don't have tools or know how. How much does a shop charge to install an Eaton?

If thats true I could have it delivered and installed for about $475. Thats not bad.

Don't buy it!
When Tracy was inquiring about getting one of these (a few years ago) I had nothing good to say about it then. I think he bought an even touger one from a ring and pinion shop in Washington state if I remeber correctly.
I put one in my step side and it lasted maybe six months. The lock rite locker is the biggest piece of crap sold on the market. They are very unsafe and not worth the money and time to put it in. You will end up taking it out and going for an Eaton or an Auburn posi. You might as well just spend the money once and not have to worry about it again. When I would drive my truck on the freeway or anywhere for that matter. It would unlock and free spool, then, all of the sudden it would grab (with a very loud bang) and launch me over two lanes of traffic. How scary is that at 60+ mph. It eventually made it so I couldn't make it up hills or even get up to speed. Nobody would ride with me and I was afraid to drive it. I was warned right before I bought it from people who already replaced theirs. I didn't listen and ended spending a lot more money then I should of. Also I called the manufacturer and they said it was a problem with my tires not the locker. What a crock, my tires weren't that old. The company doesn't want to admit it sells crap that is not only a waste of money, but dangerous too! Sorry if I sound upset, just a very bad experience with it. Is this the same as the Powertrax No Slip Traction System that http://www.jegs.com sells ?? I was thinking of either this setup or even the Eaton Limited Slip or maybe the Auburn System ?? Which one to buy ??

Thanks for the warning because I was going to order one next week but now that I know that it is a P.O.S. , I guess I will do more research on getting a Full posi setup that will still act like a Limited Slip for turning!!

I'm real happy with my Eaton. Used the old ring and pinion, just bought new bearings for the carrier. It set up just fine using the stock shims. The wear pattern was on the money and backlash was good. Haven't heard much good about the Powertrax. The Eaton always works great with no noise and is rebuildable. Nail it, get a bit sideways, and leave cool black marks.

Opposite opinion on Powertrax
Hello 70c10
In contrary to Tracy and chaptr2 I've had nothing but success with my Powertrax no slip system. It doesn't unlock and then relock when going in a straight line, it doesn't squeal around corners (at least not as bad as other like the Eaton, more on that later) unless you accelerate around a 90 degree bend, and to give an example of how effective it is, it took my truck straight up a hill with 6 in of snow and an inch of ice beneath it. (note: my truck is 2wd and had no more than 200 pounds of extra weight in the back and has approximately 400 hp) Once more that is my experience. The Eaton on the other hand I will never have any part of. It blew apart inside my old drag car (850+hp capable indeed...) and sent me into a wall. They said I had the tires inflated at different pressures from side to side and that caused torsional resistance greater than the locker was designed to handle. I said they're full of sh...tuff, everyone checks the pressure of their tires before they run. Point, counterpoint. I'll just say that so far the Powertrax works quite well.
