Gear Ratios

I have a 1971 chevy 4x4 that I just bought. I wanted to find out what gear ratios I had in the front and rear axles. I jacked up the truck and locked the hubs. I then turned the wheel one full rotation and the output shaft only turned 1.50. Is that possible? I was expecting it to turn like 3.75 or 4.11. Does anyone know if that is accurate or if maybe I have a problem with my axle. I know if anyone could answer this it would be from this website. Keep it up guys.

Re: Gear Ratios

It sounds like the spider gears are giving you a false reading. It should be a Dana 44 and have a tag on the front.

Re: Gear Ratios

I say pull the covers and count the teeth...the oil needs chainged anyways.

However, if you don't have posi, then you need to rotate the wheel twice.
I'm thinking it looks like 3.07 gears.

Re: Gear Ratios

I ended up pulling off the cover. I counted the teeth on both. I have a 3.73. I also did see a stamp on the ring gear from dana that had a 41-11 on it with is the teeth count on the ring and pinion gear. But thanks for all the help. I took off the rear and it has posi trac but unfortunately some of the clutch plate was broken off inside. Does anyone know if that whole unit needs to be replaced. That is a $400 dollar part.
