One of those days. . . .

Yesterday, I should have left my truck alone.

I installed new seat covers on both it and my wife's '91 Blazer. Almost every other tie-down loop ripped right out of them. The covers for her Blazer set me back over $200!

In the process, I stepped with all my weight on the (admittedly weak) rocker panel on the driver's side, and that puppy snapped right off at the rear. I knew there was a lot of plastic there, but I wasn't expecting that. Naturally, my falling trought the gap snapped the wires going through there.

Before putting on the seat cover, I vacuum, washed, and Armor-All-ed the seat. The new cover slides around on it like it's been greased (yeah, I know: it HAS been greased--duh!).

I'm almost afraid to install my gauges tonight. . . . .

But not afraid enough:

I pulled the old panel out, pulled it apart, and swapped together the mix of the best gauges, including the new tach parts (old one didn't have that) and the air gauge. Then, I pulled it apart again because I forgot the little cardboard tubes that shield the blinker arrows and the high beam indicator.

As some touch up paint was drying, I installed the tach harness. Then I put the panel in, screwed everything together, and tested. . . . How odd: the blinkers and the high beam indicator come on instead of the dash lights Worse, I forgot to add the little color caps to the cardboard tubes, so the arrows and the indicator are bare yellow

AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!

Out it comes again, and I install the caps. Then, I turn to the fact that the wrong lights are on. To shorten the story, I used the meter to trace the circuits--I may have a couple of bad ones, but they're gauge feeds, not lights!--and even attempt to see if the other board will work (memo: it won't). In and out three times.

Finally, I give up and install the d@mn thing so I can drive to work in the morning. By now, it's quite dark, and I need to move the truck into the garage.

But it won't start. Don't tell me I cut the 12 volt feed to the distributor rather than the tach wire!

Nope: phew! I'd just pulled the choke out so far that it didn't slide back open from inside the cab. A bit of fiddling on the side of the carb, and he fires right up. I slide into the seat to move into the garage, and I pull the light switch, knowing the wrong lights are going to glow mockingly at me, daring me to claim I'm worthy to change a tire, much less something involving electricity.

Well, whaddya know! The right lights come on--'ellifino why or what I did--and the tach even works!

Folks, I parked him, shut off the lights and ran to the house.

Tomorrow, I figure out why my radio isn't working. Maybe.

sounds kinda like my day, take a seemingly easy job like changing plugs an wire and turn it into a nitemare...i didnt take the 2 seconds to check where my number one plug wire was hooked up before i started and ripped all the wires off...i was so proud when i was done, i had them all in the right order and all organized perfectly, then went to start it and bang backfiring thru the carb...thats when my heart sank and i wanted to cry, i just gave up then and there and came in and had a beer...tommorrow i have to get my friend over here and find #1 again and do it right...damn im mad at myself

We've all had these days but yours is a bit extreme!

Ever try to do bodywork when you weren't in the mood? It doesn't work! (as well as most anything else)

When things go badly wrong like you mentioned, walk away! Go watch a movie. :p

Well, I was wrong. Oh, it "works," but it doesn't seem to want to indicate higher than 1500 RPM. I *know* my engine turns almost 3000 on the highway. The idle speed, OTOH, must be just about right.

Any ideas?

*sigh*
