Is it normal for me to be able to pull my shaft up about 1/2 inch with the steering wheel? It is not the steriing ehell moving either. If not what is wrong? How hard it is to fix or to replace my shaft. It is a not tilt colum. Thanks Travis.

Does it have play in and out or does the wheel move up and down and side to side?

If the retaining nut for the wheel is not tight enough there will be a lot of play. The shaft the wheel is on is tapered and people tend to not tighten them up enough. The bearing for the upper portion of the shaft is tapered and if the wheel nut is not tight enough it will cause play.

It may be the old loose nut behind the wheel

and it may not be you this time.

I just put a new whell on and I double checked the nut. It is the whole shaft moving up and down.

There is a spring at the lower end of the shaft with a large washer between the spring and the first joint of the steering column extension that holds the shaft and steering wheel in position. The spring is fairly stiff and if you pull on the wheel, you can move it but it should not move that easily. I would check and make sure that the spring and washer are in place.
