chevy truck steering column mod ?
Hello, Has anyone ever shortened a chevy van tilt steering column to make it fit into a 4x4 truck? I thought all I had to do was move the reverse light switch closer to the firewall. It looks like I'm going to have to shorten the whole column also. I just got done restoring this column tearing it apart sanding it and repainting it. I also replaced all the bearings and turn signal cam. Now I get to tear it all back apart! Then cut and hack it up then put it all back together again. I just love doing things the hard way! Why do it right the first time when you can do it right the second time. Anyway if anyone has done this in the past can you please let me know? The measurements would help out alot but thats probably asking to much

Re: chevy truck steering column mod ?
The simple fix is to shorten your intermediate shaft. There is a plastic block inside the hollow shaft that you heat up and compress to fit. No need to shorten the steering shaft.

Re: chevy truck steering column mod ?
What "Tx Firefighter" said....All I did was take the shaft off the column, and hit it squarely on the end while being held in a vise or standing up on one end on the floor. It will collapse to the length needed. I wouldn't use heat on it though.......
