No brake light after new turn signal switch?

Brake lights and everything else worked with old switch, except the horn and auto cancel. Put in new switch now no brake lights, hazards cause smoke and the turn signal and hazards both flash strange. Fast then slow....
Any ideas? The column is a 67 and truck is a 71. The catalogs show the same switch for all 67-72.

Check your hookup-wire color to wire color.

The new switch came with and adapter from flat to 1/2 moon. The wire colors on the truck are not the same as the colors on the new switch. The adapter has all black wires.

Re: No brake light after new turn signal switch?

The new switch has a flat plug. It came with an adapter going from the flat plug to the half moon. I did not have to hook up any wires. It was a plug and go type of thing. I would move wires if I knew where they are supposed to go.

Re: No brake light after new turn signal switch?

OK-did you have any problems installing the new switch? Sounds now like you may have a wire grounded. Check it this way--take ohm meter( unplug harness and check each wire going to switch) and see if you have a circuit (meter moves). If you do that wire is grounded. Let me know.

Re: No brake light after new turn signal switch?

No problems getting new one in. I have only used my meter for checking current. Where do I hook the probes to check the ohms? By the way, thanks for the help on this. This is the only thing I have left to do to get this thing inspected.

Re: No brake light after new turn signal switch?

Just hook one end to a ground and the other to one wire at a time.(set meter to ohms). If there is a circuit (which means wire is grounded somewhere) the meter will move like it does when you touch both probes togather with it set to ohms.
Wires on new turn signal switch should be lined up in plug the same as your old switch to make it work.
