What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

I am going to have a new garage built (someday) and want to install a lift in it and also would like to know who has the best price and lift for the money? Also, how high does your ceiling have to be to stand under the lift with the truck in the air? The garage will be the pole barn type. Thanks

This seem like a good place to ask that question:

http://www.garagejunkies.net/

BTW, your daughter still has not called me. That's okay, but we're happy to talk to her if she needs anything.

Re: What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

A minimum height would be 12' in my opinion. I have a 4 post that I just got and it goes to 6'4" from the floor to the bottom of the ramp when all the way up. As far as which one to get well, that is really a open ended question. I got one made by Rotary. Rotary is owned by Dover elevator co. I fiqure people use elevators everyday so those guys know there stuff. I took a tour of there plant as they are about 1 hour from me. I was impressed with there quality. You get what you pay for.

That might be something to consider. If you can find a local vendor you can save on shipping...

Re: What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

Yeah Im not sure what part of Ky he is in but there are 2 lift companies within 1 hour from Louisville. Challenger Lift is in downtown Louisville and Rotary is in Madison Indiana. I chose Rotary cause the price was a little better as they had the XLT model for the same price as the standard model price. I saved about $300 picking it up vs shipping.

Re: What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

Thanks, that is a really great site. Are you on there? My daughter is really too busie getting ready to come back to Kentucky to get married. She has a lot on her mind right now. We will pick them up in Nashville on Saturday. Her and John will get married the day after Thanksgiving. So I am not supprised she has not called you. Looks like 12' should do the trick in height. Have not asked about a good lift yet, but will.

No, I'm not a member. I just go there sometimes to drool and dream.

I am not offended that I have not heard from her. I just want her to know that she can call if she needs anything.

Re: What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

Thanks, when they get back I am sure they will be needing information on San Antonio. She is use to jumping in the jeep and going to the beach and she told me the beach is about a four hour drive (I think) form there. She really seems to like San Antonio. Now they say they might stay there maby three years. They can save some money because Toyota is paying for everthing and even letting them use a Toyota free. So they really do not have any bills. No ulility bills or anything. Toyota even pays for the cable. John is some kind of engerneer. I think I spelled that wrong. Oh well.

I need a job like that!

The beach is about 2.5 hours to Corpus Christi. It is a nice city, and things are cheap there like here. It is probably not the kind of beach she is used to, though. Lots of brown water.

Re: What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

My lift is a 2 post Rotary 10,000 lb. You need close to 12' ceiling. They do make models that can get by with a lower ceiling, but I'd go as high as you can. One of the best garage tools I have ever bought! Oh, and you need to make sure your concrete is thick enough where you will put the lift.

Re: What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

Sounds good. Thanks for the pictures. My ceiling is going to be 12' high. It is going to be a pole type. By the way, nice SS. I am wondering about the garage doors. I will have door openers on both doors. I guess you will just have to make sure you have enough room in front of the garage openers.

Re: What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

Yes, don't do like I did with my ceiling fan. That one in the pic had to be moved after I tried to lift a van and the fan was in the way. All the dimensions are on the Rotary website if you need for reference. I'd think most lifts would be in the ballpark. My shop started as a pole barn as well. 50X70 with 12' ceilings and (4) 10' x 10' garage doors with concrete and insulation. I've added a divider wall, more insulation, ceiling, electric, heat, etc etc over the last few years.

Oh and you will gain many new friends once you get a lift.......

Re: What is the best lift and how high does the ceiling have to be?

I have had an Eagle 4-poster since 1996. It is the best "tool" that I ever bought. Although I have not used it for the truck, it has been great for several car repair/restoration projects over the years.

As I recall they required 4 or 5 inches plus the height of both vehicles, assuming that you will use it to store 2 vehicles. If not, I suppose you could add the height of the truck from the chassis to the roof (the tires give you some usable space), plus your height and add a few little). I would ask any of the manufacturers for advice.
