Stall converter
OK I purchased A hughs 10" 3000 stall converter from A guy I know for $150.00. I put It in yesterday and took it for A spin. I installed A TH400 in place of my old granny 4-speed. 308 gears and no kickdown switch yet.
cons: 1) It feels like A slipping clutch when starting out: However it isnt like it waits until the truck gets to 3000 rpm before it starts to move. 2) It softened my shift kit that I installed. I will have to go back into the trans and drill bigger holes to get my harder shift back. (transgo shift kit). 3) I seem to be always cruising around 2000 RPM. Gas milage will suffer. pros: 1) OH my god Hold on to your pants because this thing really wakes up when you mash the gas. FUN FACTOR is here for sure. 2) When I put the truck into drive it doesnt slam into gear. 3)When I mash the gas from A dead stand still it melts my 295 50 15. I wish I had A limited slip. 4) When stopped at an intersection I dont have to mash hard on the brakes to hold the truck from inching foward. 4 wheel drums manual version. Bottom line it is very fun!!! OH one more thing I am glad I installed A 1 piece driveline Gary

Re: Stall converter
Sounds cool, but make sure you put a nice big trans cooler on that thing. It's not a good idea to have your cruise speed less than your stall speed due to the heat you create in the converter....plus the inefficiency (bad mileage).
Does sound ike it'd be more fun to drive though!

Re: Stall converter
I am running the 28,000 GVW transcooler. That should be enough. I dont think they make one bigger?

Re: Stall converter
that is a WAY bad thing to cruise under the rating. You should consider a gear swap.

Re: Stall converter
I beleive you need the gears. With the convertor that loose you may will overheat the tranny constantly. You may already be able to smell the difference in the tranny fluid.A cooler will cool the fluid but it may be getting hot enough in the tranny(before it gets to the cooler) to cause some damage.
