How to install indicator pointer?

How do you install the indicator pointer with tilt on a 71 gmc? Mine is broken off.

Re: How to install indicator pointer?

If part of the old piece is still stuck inside the column housing---you got to get that out. Unscrew the two phillips screws that hold in the (PRNDL) thingy and remove it. Then get a piece of stiff, thin wire and make a very small hook on the end and try to fish out the old indicator piece. Once out, then --look at how the new one hooks onto the (PRNDL) --it kind of clips over the bottom a bit. Now just reinstall. The white indicator is supposed to slide in and out as you tilt the wheel housing so some WD40 might help. These things get brittle over time so you might whant to consider this by having a spare. Re: How to install indicator pointer?

With the tilt all the way down and the indicator housing removed, the old indicator pointer can be removed as it just slides out. Slide the new indicator pointer into the bezel and make sure that it will move in and out freely. once it is in place hook the lower part of the indicator pointer onto the housing and reattach the housing.

Here is a pic that shows the indicator pointer and housing.

Re: How to install indicator pointer?

Huck is right about the old piece probably still being in there. Most I have done had a small piece still left down inside the channel. If you can't fish it out take a lenght of small guage wire - heat it red hot with propane torch- gently insert it into the plastic as far as it will melt in - let cool - then pull the whole works out. had to do this a few times after getting frustrated not being able to hook an edge.
