Re: @#%* Oil Filter
with regard to over tightening, I always do what longhorn said, clean oil on the seal, spin until you hit the block, then another full turn to compress the gasket to my liking.....Never had a problem getting an oil filter off by hand, unless I already had oil on my hands....then I have to use that tool I call a paper towel for extra leverage.
I was always taught to fill the filter 3/4 full to avoid running a big air pocket through your system....although my girlfriends escort has a filter at a 90 degree angle to ground, so I can't get any oil in it....maybe its a ferd thing!

I thought whine bottles had corks... don't they "pull" out The Chiltons book on my silverado acutally tells you to fill the oil filter and and take your finger and put oil on the rubber seal as well. I've always changed my oil this way as well.

Re: @#%* Oil Filter
I read in Chevy High Performance a few years ago that a filter was stuck on because the PO had used too long a bolt to bolt the trans to the block & one bolt hole goes into the filter area, & it butted into the fliter making it impossible to get off. mabe check the bellhousing bolt? you said you didnt know when the oil was changed last? Just my 2 cents. good luck!

Re: @#%* Oil Filter
when you get the old one off and before you put the new one on, make sure the old gasket is not on the engine or you will double gasket it and will lead to a huge oil leak.

Re: @#%* Oil Filter
I have to say, on my 1970 chevy pickup c/20 350.... it had a Fram oil filter on it, and i couldnt get it off, i was going the right way, the oil filter looked like it went through a meat grinder, but it did come off.. then i replaced it of course with a fram oil filter... and when i went to take that one off 3,000 miles later, it did the same thing as it did before, i do plenty of oil changes and i did not over tighten it.. but when i saw (@$^ OIL FILTER i laughed and thought someone had the same problem i did...

Re: @#%* Oil Filter
Still dont have it off! I was able to find and order a specialty tool to remove it from here: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalo...filtertool.php
It should be here tomorrow(ship priority overnight). I even tried to hammer it out at the base with no effect. Heres a couple of pics where im at now. As you can see, I got hacked off at it!

Re: @#%* Oil Filter
You're a mile away from using a paper towel to finish up. Hope your tool comes tomorrow.
I don't think a finger of oil on the gasket would have made much difference when you tighten it that much. D@mn you make me feel good about my few oil filter mishaps.

Are you able to use a screwdriver on those holes and 'chisel' it out, so to speak?

Re: @#%* Oil Filter
Be there! I ripped all my hair out one time! Now I let the sucker drip a bit
before I'll ever over tighten the sucker again. I used a punch and a small sledge that I cut the handle down to make it easier to work with. Just light taps all around and it WILL come off. Before that I tried needle nose pliers spread open stick the ends in the holes and a adj. wrench on the main body to turn it. This worked too.
