Got engine and tranny out Friday, and found a piece of electrical tape covering a hole in firewall. It is just left and down from steering wheel shaft.
Looks like it a factory stamped hole.
What is it for?

My guess is its the hole for clutch linkage. Got a picture?

For some reason my machine won't size pics for this forumIt used to just fine.
Correction The hole is RIGHT side of shaft sorry I was looking at cab from front.
So not clutch linkage. Truck is automatic, which makes me think it might be a hole for another some other option not equiped on this truck?

But the hole is just at floor level of cab. Size about 1 1/2 inch, more oval shape. More like what a rod or tube would go through.
This is frustrating because I have good pictures.

That is the clutch linkage hole. I'll try do dog up pics here in a min, they7 came in 2 locations, so I'll post both holes.
There was a stamped metal snap in plug in there 30 years ago, but it probably fell out 20 years ago and some one's feet were cold so the tape cot comissioned for the job.
The hole is about 1 1/2 inches or so, and slightly oval, right> And it is to the right of your gas pedal as you are in the truck.

Notice, on the gold firewall, the hole is facing the front of the truck. This is how most 67 - 72 truck cabs are. I did a poll a few years ago and something like 75% were like this one. That is my 70 one ton Longhorn... my spare cab, '70 3/4 ton longhorn is the same way.
The other picture, the black firewall, that is my X-truck, 69 GMC 1/2 ton short/fleet. You can see the hole is facing the frame.
No one has been able to clue in some light... no one has even had a good theory.
It just is what it is.

I think he is talking about the one right by the white X on your firewall. I used to have a pic of the stock plug that filled the hole, I found one and sold it on here 2 years ago or so.
