BIGTIME Prob.!!!!!!!!
I have a 1988 1-ton 4x4 Crew that is a real pain. The front end worps the rotors: 4x4parts : replaced the springs, bushings, flex-lines, rotors,wheels ,tires, ti- rod end, steering stabilizer shock. Ck'd: proportional valve( It leaks when lines are disconected) the calipers (The pasenger side did not leak)Bendix Prob.: The truck shakes from side to side & evetually worps the rotors Thanks for any help!!!!

Does it shake before they warp or only after ? If before , balance the tires . If after something is sticking and causing heat . If nothing is sticking , the rear brakes are not working correctly and overworking the fronts . Frank

I'd look an see if the caliper is sticking after it's been driven a while. Again, if the rears are out of adjustment the fronts will get over worked.
One thing that you haven't looked at is the kingpins. If yours is a 1 ton, you should have a dana 60 front axle. which would be equipped with kingpins instead of ball joints. if the king pins are worn they will cause a shake when you get on the brakes. They shouldn't cause the rotors to warp, but they will cause a nasty shake over a bump or on the brakes. Otherwise known as Death wobble.....Hop over to www.CK5.com and search on death wobble. I would go with the caliper sticking, but I would also go with the fact that the back brakes are not doing their job and you are working the front brakes too hard so that they are getting hot and warping your discs. I would make sure that your rear brakes are adjusted right and the pads are good. The fact that the proportional valve is leaking by could mean that the valve is putting more to the front than it should.

We use for pulling a cattle trailer & Live weight moves.What is the best way to check the rear brakes and adjust them?.Should you clean or replace the calipers?

the rears should be drum brakes, have the drum machined if possible, replace pads and there should be a small wheel with teeth on it that you can spin a few clicks at a time until they are adjusted.. also they should be self adjusting to some point..by backing up and getting on the brakes, though i have never tried this.

When it clicks your going tighter spreading the shoes apart. If it doesent move your going the wrong way. With at least the drums on spin the wheel/drum and adjust them. Do this until you hear contact between the shoe and drum and you get slight resistance. Do this to both sides and try to get an equal amount of resistance. After you have done this push the brake pedal, then the depress E-brake and release, note how many clicks until it stops. You want 5 or less clicks but you can fine tune that latter by adjusting the cable. Check the rear wheels again for resistance sometimes it will change if it does re adjust them like before. After your finsihed with these adjustments take the truck out and slowly back up and slowly apply the E-Brake. Do this a few times and your set. If you still donot have the proper amount of clicks on the E-brake for the truck to stop just on the rear brakes crawl under the truck and locate the cable adjusment, tighten the screw a couple threads at a time to set the E-Brake pedel.

I had a problem with two of my '85's. Thought the caliper (rt frt) was locking up. Replaced the caliper and no difference. Then I replaced the flexible brake line at the caliper. Must have been restricted bigtime. The reason I replaced the caliper on the other truck was that this problem occured about 2 years later, and one is a 1ton, and the other is a half ton. I just figured that the restricted flex line was a pretty rare occurance. Just passing along an overlooked possibility.

The deterioration of the brake line hoses is a VERY common occurance in these trucks. As a matter of fact it continues on to the later models also. Replacement of these hoses is a good idea as the truck gets older.
