Oil filter adapter gasket?

My new crate 350 needs an oil filter adapter for the screw-on oil filter. I was going to just buy a new one if they weren't too expensive, but the auto parts store didn't have one. I now plan to use the old one off the 305. The folks at O'Reilly sold me a Fel-Pro oil cooler kit when I asked for an oil filter adapter gasket, and said that is the only way they sell the gasket.

It came with a lot of o-rings that I don't need and 2 gaskets. My plan was to use the gasket that looked like the one that came off the old engine, but the adapter was installed on the old block without a gasket.

Of the two included gaskets, both have holes that line up with the bolts, but neither of them is shaped like the adapter. Which of the gaskets do I use?

Would NAPA or someone have a new part with the gasket? Is it actually supposed to have a gasket? Does the kit I have even have the right gasket, or is the included gasket for a different shaped part that is used by an oil cooler?

Re: Oil filter adapter gasket?

Are you talking about the piece that the filter actually screws to? That doesn't use a gasket.

Re: Oil filter adapter gasket?

Yes, the aluminum piece that has two bolt holes in it. It bolts to the block with two bolts, and the filter threads onto it. It just bolts in place metal-to-metal, huh?

I was told that it uses a gasket, but I guess the info was wrong. I figured the previous owner screwed it up, just like everything else he touched on the truck.

Thanks,

Re: Oil filter adapter gasket?

No gaskets on the factory piece. Aftermarket adapters such as Mr.Gasket use a gasket.
