how to get the build sheet??????

I just recently saved, a 72 custom deluxe 10, from the scrapper, it was sitting in the far back of a local wrecking yard, no interior, no engine or trans, but it has a straight body, very little rust, and looks like it had quite a few options, but I cannot verify since the glove box door, has been removed and sold,
Here is what I know so far, it came from the fact, with a 400 BB, auto trans, a/c,
now it does have 2 saddle tanks plus the main tank behind where the seat wouldve been , bed rails, its hugger orange and white
how can I determine what options it left the factory with, what might be dealer installed,

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

I'm assuming you mean the option sheet on the glovebox door?

This will be tuff, you can call GM for a resto packet, all you need
is the VIN #, however it still might not tell you everything, & btw
this is FREE to US folks, I will dig up the number and edit my post,
Now that I recall, I'm not sure it's even VIN specific, but I would
have it on hand just in case, good luck on getting your info, cya.

Phone number is 1-800-222-1020 (Ask for the Restoration packet)

PS - These can be reproduced, I along with others here have a
Excel file that is set up, just plug in your option codes, get you
a blank glovebox sticker, and whala, almost as good as Original.

Just PM me if you have any other questions, I'll try to help you.

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

The original build sheet was probably located in the back of the seat.........but
there might be a second build sheet behind the gas tank in the cab

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

I agree, the build sheet is most likely long gone with that seat.
The restoration packet is a good thing to have, and it is not VIN specific, not here in the US. Canadians get vehicle specific info, but there's isn't free.
You can post pics of the truck and we could probably pickl out every option on it, including any opton package it may have.

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

I have recently discovered that the VIN# DOES NOT always work for the build sheet. I have a 68 C10 and according to the searches I have done, my truck came with a 210HP 327, when in fact it came with a 300HP, I have all the motor tore apart and ran the numbers and verified its true nature. (the build sheet did verify this) So I do not trust just the vin# for the build sheet, BUT I have found the build sheets in back of the seat as well as on the bottom of the sheet-which both have seen better days.

How did your vin tell you ANYTHING about your engine?

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

VIN numbers, at least those that don't have 17 digits/characters, don't have any info about engine type on our trucks.

Changing brands (Brand F, to be specific), I had to change my front brake calipers/pads. Since one of them was hanging up, reman's were the only way to go. The NAPA store that I was using, had one. They ordered another one and I went the next day to pick them both up, after taking my old ones with me for cores. When I started to install the first one, it fell through the mounting bracket. So, I took them back to the NAPA store. They got my cores and compared them. Sure enough, my cores were bigger. They also only had one of the correct size and it was a Saturday. So, I went to the distribution center to get the other one. My parts guy said even though I had an F-100 (1983), it apparently had an F-150 suspension/brakes on it. It was a SWB/V-8 truck,

I was kinda torqued about the ordeal, so I took my VIN to the local F dealer and had them to check on-line, as to the type of brakes it had. After they had done their electronic investigation, they also confirmed that nothing in their system said it had the bigger brake system on it. Supposedly, F-100's had the large passenger car brakes and used their wheels. Mine had the old standard 5 on 5.5-inch F bolt pattern.

So, don't trust the VIN to tell you everything. Sometimes, things happen that make the data wrong.

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

Vin's are mostly generic. They cannot tell every option on a vehicle or they could be 40 characters long in some cases and 3 in others. They merely tell year, style, plant and sequence number and so forth. Details are left to the option sheets and build sheets.
I have been arguing with my local dealer for two weeks about a rearend in a 71 Longhorn. He tells me all Longhorns were Dana's and I told him he was crazy. I recieved pics and took my option packet along with the factory service manual and showed him the details on the truck.
Dana was a 5500 lb axle, Eatons were 5200 and 7200 lb axles. Then there was the 11k axle. A Longhorn with the LS9 option was indeed a 350 engine with a 4:10, 5200 lb, leaf spring Eaton axle, option G50 heavy rear spring and no-spin axle available in the 5200 only. The Dana was a maximum traction rear option. And the Vin was of no help on any of this.
You need the Resto pack and need to know your truck. Then you can be sure to obtain the correct parts yourself and not trust parts store kids or dealers that think they know all years and parts.

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

so, in other words, if i cant find the original build sheet, in the truck I am SOL
but I can probably go through a list of availible options from 72, and make a new option sheet for the glove box, it will just take more time and research,
thank you all for the replies

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

I just called for my Suburban packet. WOW they are super nice! Everyone I spoke to was very helpful and interested in meeting my needs. They couldn't find a 69 Suburban kit, but they're going to send me a '71 version now, and the 69 when they get more.

I first selected product literature. Wrong. Just go straight to customer service. They all referred to it as a restoration kit.

thank you for this info i hope it works!!

its my understanding , when selling an all original #s matching vehicle restored to original
this is a very valuble piece of original paper . even if its just a copy

am i right or is there a better way to confirm your vehicle is authentic?

$50 sounds worth. if your aiming for a time capsule vehicle

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

Thanks for the info deth_1970, but now for the scrutinizing part of this post: Do you know for FACT that you can purchase THEE build sheet for a given VIN number?

Have you done it or seen it or is this all THEORETICAL suppose to stuff?

Do they have a web site? Can you go there in person? Or is it all over the phone? Any idea what else they would have at that archive??????

Thanks man.

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

I found a telephone number for the GM Heritage Center:

586-276-0695 (I hope it's accurate...)

Note: The GM Heritage Center is a part of GM

Called, but all I got was air (no busy signal, no message, no error, nothing). I'm going to try to give them a call on Monday.

I found a Caddy site that had more information, but I still want to make sure they have 67-72 truck and blazer information before I send them a check.

The Caddy site is: here

Once I found out more information I will let you guys. If it all works out I will take pictures of what I received and post them here.

Re: how to get the build sheet??????

I got the restoration package for a 1968 chevy and here is what I found out.

For owners of chevrolet trucks that were originally sold in the US you can get a restoration package that has information such as standard equipment and optional equipment for your model year of truck. This info is NOT VIN specific. GMC owners are out of luck but I'm sure they would send you chevy one if you asked nicely (they were extremely helpful).

However I was told that owners of trucks originally sold in the US can't get VIN specific information, it does not exist. Trucks that were originally sold in Canada CAN get VIN specific information by calling the Vintage vehicle services folks.

That is what I found out. If someone knows how to get VIN specific information or has done it for a truck originally sold in the US please let us know how to do it.

Thanks!
