FedEx broke my Tranny
i bought a transmission from florida off of ebay last christmas and it broke down in november, so when i got home from college during christmas break, i sent my transmisison back to the company for warranty work via fedex. well, i sent the tranny on december 27 and it was supposed to be in florida in 5 days. i got no response until about jan 13 and fedex didnt know what happened to it. finally, on jan 23 or so, they told me it was damaged and sent it back to me. i just got it today and saw the damage. it seems as if they had it on a shelf and it got dropped because one of the ears on the bellhousing where it bolts to the engine was broken off and there is a small crack. i filled out the claim and should be getting a check for replacement value of the transmision from fedex. my question for you guys is if i can still use the tranny. if i get it fixed from a local company, could i still bolt it up to the engine. there is only one bolt that would not be able to go in and i have a welder to weld up the crack, its only about 1 inch long and very small. or do you think the whole thing is shot because of this???
thanks, 67pro-street |

Re: FedEx broke my Tranny
Once you weld it back up, as long as it is done right, It wont be a problem and I would use it!

Re: FedEx broke my Tranny
That is one of the benefits of aluminum, it can be rewelded easily, and remachined if it needs to be, unlike cast iron you have to heat the he77 out of it then weld it and that tends to cause other issues because of the intense heat needed.

Re: FedEx broke my Tranny
67sss, i really appreciate you offering that transmission to me. unfortunately i have a 700r4. i dont think that i could swap them, but i may be wrong??? will i be able to use my mig welder to weld the crack seeing as how the casing is aluminum, or do i need to have someone with a tig welder do that?? sorry for the bombardment of questions, but i really appreciate the help.

I would have it tig welded.

Re: FedEx broke my Tranny
TIG is the only way to have it welded. Find somebody that welds a lot of aluminum. The crack will need to have the end drilled or it will get longer. A good welder will know what to do on it. I would also clean the housing and look for more cracks. They make penetrating dyes for this. We used them on aircraft parts all the time. Don't know if the welder would have any.

Re: FedEx broke my Tranny
I have had to file 2 claims with fedex in the last year. As long as you had it insured and can verify its value then they pay really fast. I have no complaints about there speed when it comes to that at all. Ups on the other hand is hell to deal with on a claim.
