column question
i think i am going to buy a 79 chevy 4x4,but it has a 82 chevy steering column in it and the adapters do not meet up to plug the 2 together,is there something i need,or does anyone know what colors to splice together to make it work, the truck is in pretty good shape,i mean as far as being mechanically sound,it has power locks, windows, new tires, comes w/ an awesome set of fenders, extra t-case,and the guy only wants 450 for it.i just cant hear it run because the whole column deal, but i am just going to resell it anyway,im not much for this stlye truck, but i figured i could make a couple bills off of it,can anyone help w/ my column question.......mike

Re: column question
well try to find a later 70's steering column, in 1981 the body style changed and so did parts of the chassis to make the truck lighter and in many ways more effiecent, thats why many of the 70s trucks arent as rotted out like the newer trucks, the steel they use today is CHEAP and Rots Easy,
anyway, that '82 column has the winsheild wiper controls on the turn signal? right? |

Re: column question
1984 shouid be the first year for wipers on the column. The 82 column should be a plug and play in a 79. Are you swapping between tilt and non-tilt by any chance?
My experience has been that the two connectors on the main body of the column are oriented exactly opposite between tilt and non-tilt. I have been able to overcome this by twisting the dash wiring harness to mate with the column. |

Re: column question
do you have the original column and if so can the ele. parts be swopped to the new column and work that way? and more importantly i might be interested in the ride as is if you dont want to put much time and money in it and want to make a few dollars. let me know i really have been pondering on a 4x4 for playing purposes.
