starter shim
I can't remember which... If the starter gear squeals on withdrawal (after engine starts)-- does the shim go on engine side or outside for proper clearance?

It's a catastrophic success.

Re: starter shim
Usually squeals and simular sounds are dry bearings or bushings in the starter.Grinding or misengaging are from misalignment and the shims go between the starter and the engine block.

Re: starter shim
It is a new starter. usually there is a note for starter installation in the box --which I misplaced -- that says which side to put the shim depending on whether the noise in upon engagement or upon engine starting.
