Just thought I would say hey to all! We are new to the boards and already we have found tons of useful info for our old bolt. We are the proud new owners of a 58 apache 3200. Just thought I would toss up a couple of pics after a much needed buffing and wax. Not the best pics but it was getting late. Lots of plans for this truck! Hey thanks for the flowers. Well I myself would really like to see it left the original color. My hubby wants to make it more of a hot rod, custom burgundy paint, fat rims and god knows what else.

Right now we are just trying to replace missing or worn out parts. All the body seals, interior parts, a bumper...... you know the little stuff HAHA

The interior is the worst off, so that is where we are starting......

I'm with you, keep it stock, but then that was my preference for my 59 as well as most vehicles. If hubby wants to streetrod a truck the short steps or fleets seem more preferable. See what looks like the V8 hood emblem, does your truck still have the original 283 engine. You might want to also check out www.stovebolt.com A super site for old GM truck folks.

Why yes it does have the 283, not sure if it is the original. The tag on the body that gives details about the production of the truck is gone

I really wish it was there because I wanted to see where it was built, what it did come with etc....

Is the VIN tag inside the drivers door missing? If so, did you get a title with a VIN # with the truck? An original V8 truck VIN will start with letter V. You might check the motor S/N also or look for casting and date codes.

That paint thats on it looks fairly fresh. Kind of a shame to change it. Any idea what the name of that color is? Judging by the hood emblem, I'd say that truck came with the 283. Or someone changed that too. The 6 cyl trucks had a slight different one.

The vin number is still there but isnt there a tag that has more codes on it? I had another old car that had a seperate tag with a ton of codes. We were able to break it down to determine where it was made, what day, what the car came with ect....


The paint is 10 years old. And it wasnt a very good job they signed the heck out of it but from 10ft you cant tell. The color is dawn blue and pure white.

As Poncho says the hood emblem looks like a V8 emblem although the pics are not that clear. If a factory V8 the first digit of your VIN will be a V. Try the VIN decoder here http://www.americanclassic.com/ the button on the left. It will tell you whether it was factory V8, series truck, the year, assembly plant and your truck production number (starts with 100,001 for first truck at that plant for the YOM.) Let us know what you have. Don't believe most of these older trucks had a trim plate per se. My 59 has another plate just below the VIN tag which is larger and blue which has the paint code stamped on it. I'm computer challenged or I would post a pic here for you. Email me if you need a pic emailed.

That was the vin decoder that I used, they have alot of good parts!

It didnt offer too much info other than it is a 58 with a 283 and it doesnt show where it was built


I see all the codes for trans, gears and color but I dont see where it says what mine is.

The assembly plant code is the LETTER directly following the year designator, in your case 58. Here is a list of the code letters and corresponding assembly plants.

The code changed significantly in 1953. VINs now had: Series (single letter); Model Year (last digit of the year); Factory Code (now changed to letters); and Production Order symbols. Each series was separately numbered in sequence for that particular plant (Starting at 001001).

The truck in the example is the 900th 1954 1-Ton truck built at Atlanta.





1955 2nd Series (First of the "Task Force" trucks)

With the '55 2nd series came some more changes. The first symbol was the code for the Series of the truck (1/2-ton, 3/4-ton etc.) and the second symbol was a "2" for second series of '55 trucks. The 3rd and 4th symbols were the year, and then came the plant symbol. Last of course, was the sequence number (6 digits and started with 001001 at each plant).

The truck in the example is the 100th 1955 Second Series 1/2-Ton truck built at Janesville.



1956 - 1959 ("Task Force" trucks)

The first and second symbols indicated the Series (all light trucks had a "3" in the first position). Third and fourth symbols indicated the two-digit year. The fifth symbol indicated the assembly plant (now changed to letters from numbers). Last was the the sequence number (6 digits and started with 001001 at each plant).

The truck in the example is the first 1956 1-Ton truck built at Flint.
