Question rings ?

Hello I have a 78 truck with a 305 in it thats using too much oil and i was wanting to put new rings in it BUT i dont have enough downtime to have the block done at the machine shop and i was wondering how well a ring job would hold up by just honing the clinders also what rings shouild i get and how do tell the auto store what size i want?? I just need somthing to last for about a year untill i can do a proper rebuild on it. OR am i making a big mastake trying to do the rings?
