calibration kit for 1406 carb
Has enyone bought a caibrating kit from edelbrock? My 1406 carb has a small ammount of hessitation and rarely the 4 bbl opens in the first gear (th350) and sometimes bogs. Has enyone ever have this probleme? I caled edelbrock and they told me to get the kit #1487 so I ordered it. It will be in on wensday. I'm just wondering if he is pulling a fast one on me.

A kit is a good idea, however, you coulda probably tuned the hesitation out, and the other 2 jugs open, you just aren't feeling it. They open mechanicly, and if there was no fuel, it's fall on its face and you'd know it.

I got a tuning kit for my 1407,& you will find that edelbrock has a lot of tuning info.If you dont have the hand book,just go to the site under carbs.... http://www.edelbrock.com/

I bought the kit, and istalled bigger metering rods in the "power" section of the carb. Fixed the lean problem, but dropped my MPG down to 10-12 . I should proably put the stock rods back in, and some heavier springs, but i haven't gotten around to it. I bought the kit at Autozone, they matches Summit's price on it.

Just got the project ruck running a coupla weeks ago with the 1406 and a air gap intake. Man, it runs like crap. Running too rich at idle, judging by the black spark plugs, and backfires through the carb under hard acceleration, or when "blipping" the throttle hard.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? the thing seems to be running both rich and lean, depending on conditions. |

Slick 1,if you have a pretty wild cam(low vacumn),you may need to change the stepup springs to keep it out of the main circuit @ idle. Edelbrock also reccomends running the vac advance on full manifold source at the carb to pick up the vacumn with hotter cams. Right out of the box, my 1406 had a bog just off-idle. An Edelbrock tech guy sent me a new accelerator pump (w/ stiffer spring) for free. I also had to change the pump link position on the lever. I have never bought a tuning kit, just a few step-up springs, metering rods, and jets here and there. Read the owner's manual -- it's very informative.

Every Edelbrock Carb ive bought new which is only 3.ive bolted them on,adjusted the 2 screws,and never had anyproblems-well except one got full of crap-dirt,etc.i pulled it off pulled it apart and sprayed it out with carb cleaner put it back on ran like a champ-easiest carbs to mess with.Im looking forward to buying there 800cfm,whe i get this other motor together.

Longhornmail, when I manualy shift, I can here and feel the 4bbl opening up(sometimes)
but when I leeve it in drive its a diffrent story.Also today I tried to retime the engine(I was at 14 degrees and went to 6 degrees) that made it start better.The vacume hose from the dist is pluged on the driver side inlet mind you, I feel no suction from the hose to the dist, is this normal? |

The engine is a bone stock Mr Goodwrench, no radical cam. It only has about 15 miles on it so far. I can't figure out this carb backfire thing. I know that carb backfire is caused by a lean condition, but the plugs were black as coal again. I threw them away, and replaced with AC rapid Fire #1's. Didnt get a chance to restart it, as I also pulled the manifold and replaced the gaskets, just in case the backfire was being caused by a leak. I've tried both ports for the advance vacuum, neither cured the backfire. Iv'e sent Edelbrock an email, no response yet. Tried calling them, but the line was busy.
$42 bucks for a calibration kit, and who knows if that'll fix it? may be time to start rebuilding my Holley! Yellow, what was your "lean" problem? what were the symtoms? [This message has been edited by Slick1 (edited April 23, 2002).] |

Slick1,I wonder about the air gap intake on the stock 350. Is that a perf air gap,or perf RPM air gap?

It's not the RPM version, just the Performer Air Gap. I'm not trying to build a race truck. Just something that is well behaved for driving around town.

I was Holley,& nothing but for many yrs.......but Im runnin an edelbrock 1407 on my 383,& I like it! Edelbrock has a lot of info on their products,& any ? on e mail have been answered promtly. If I was racing ,I would go holley,as I have spent more time tuning them.....but on the street,d@mmitwhen you get that edelbrock set up,you wont mess with it again! Its a good carb dude.....give it a chance........69

OK, I got the intake manifold gaskets replaced. Pulled the horn to check the float adjustments, both adjustments were WAY OFF! so much for a run-it-right-from-the-box carb. Adjusted the floats, adjusted the timing, re-adjusted the idle mixture, installed new plugs, and went for a drive. ALl is good except for the WOT acceleration. still surges. I'm going to try some richer metering rods for that condition. I'll let you guys know when i get em in, how well that works. thanks for all your help.

Slick1 ,thats one I forgot to mention.....I also had to adjust the floats in my edelbrock. 1 side was 1/16 too high! That was always the first step on a Holley ,before any tuning(thats 1 thing I miss on the Holley,the sight plugs,& external adjusters).......69

Both the float level and float drop were way off on this one. I do miss the sight glass and external adjustment, but taking the horn off on this one was fairly easy. Just don't drop any of the three teeny tiny hairpin clips!
