.....OK, before ya bust my butt or not searching....I did, and I'm either too dumb to find the answer or this really is confusing....

Identifying numbers found...
Casting number "3934635" on the 3rd member
"T PW 052 702" stamped on the 3rd member

I was under the "assumption" that the HO72 had the load bolt. My red circled area is the load bolt, correct? This is a from my son's 1970 K20 and there were only a couple owners before us, so I think it is all original, which most sources say this should be the HO52. The stamped number includes a "52"......I suppose that would be too simplistic, huh?!?!?

I will also assume that I have the open differential, since each side will spin opposite of each other in my fingers. (I know, I'm REAL high tech!!!)

Can ya guys (gals) help me?!?!?!?!

The same guts would bolt into either diff the H052 or H072...so not sure what you want to know..but either will work..and yah that one has the load bolt. It's not the guts that matter really..you just take that whole third member and swap it in....that's the easy way. They both use the same axle spline count. The load bolts on both the H052 or H072...but on the latter years.
And from what I can see from your pic its not as detroit locker...I got em ..and there is no locker as I can see the inner gear in the pic.

I have owned 2 HO52's, and they both had that deflection bolt, just like my HO72.

I guess the big reason I'm asking is for proper documentation of the truck, buying parts, and for my own knowledge.

I would have thought, that there was a definative way (casting numbers, stamps, etc.) to tell what these axles are. Engine blocks and many other parts have a way of being positively ID'ed........

There may be, but it is not at all as well documented as Chevy engines.
EDIT: both of my Eaton 3rd members had the pinion and ring gear tooth counts stamped into them, and it looks like it was done by hand. I couldn't see any markings on the one that came factory with the locker.

It is an open diff, I can see spider gears in the 2nd pic.

No differentiation because there`s no differencr,same parts.The difference is in the brakes/outer area.And,the fact that no HO52s were narrow.

I did look up the casting number but it wasn't in my parts book. "3934635"..if the last number was a 4 then it would have been in there...but even so all it listed was the rear cover casting piece for 68-72 3/4 and 1 ton trucks.

And no HO72's were set up for coils.
