Opinions regarding WIX filters
Does anyone run these oil filters on their truck? What is the general consensus.....good, bad, so so or what?

I run wix on all my vehicles. A bit more expensive. Sorry, I can't say if they are better. I have heard that they are though. How does one tell if filter a is better than filter b?

I ran them on all my stuff! I've been told there the best! Oh and if you want to get that Wix filter cheaper then go to NAPA and buy there gold brand filter (it's made by wix it says so on the back of the box!)
Alex if you want a way to tell witch filter is the best go out buy every different kind of filter that you can find and cut it open with a hack saw. I sell auto parts and we did the cut a filter apart test. the wix filter has almost 150% the media of the other brands and the pores are smaller to catch those small particles. I don't even mess with anything other than wix. if you need a higher flow filter get one for a 454. that will fit on a smallblock and will filter almost all of the oil.

Do not know if is still is on the web or not but there used to be site on that someone had cut apart various filters to see what was the best made and wix was said to be the best. They had tested everything from name brands to store brand.

I use WIX on everything. Used to work for a rental co. that had heavy equip. down to small, and we used WIX on anything that used an oil filter.

I run Wix on my truck. I too have heard they are the best. It says on the box that Nascar uses them on their cars so i figure if they run Wix it must be good, right?

I'm the mechanic at work. We use the Napa-made by Wix filter on everything from 888 crawlers crane to pickup to dozers to loaders ect. They are the same filter, to get the Napa # just remove the front two digits on the Wix #.

I am a turf equipment tech. and we use Carquest filters, made by WIX, never have had any problems on the 35 or so peices of equipment we use their oil filters on, or the 40+ hydraulic filters, or the 65+ fuel filters or the 75+ air filters. Carquest # = WIX, drop first 2 and replace with 85 for oil+hydro 86 for fuel, and 87 or 88 for air.
WIX rep sez only difference is wix paint, napa paint or carquest paint ------------------ 72 3/4 lwb fleet 427 t350 4x4 under construction

It might be the same one reposted; I can't be sure since I'm getting bandwith restrictions on the first one. This is the one I've read a few times in the past few years...
To sum it up (it's a BIG page, dialuppers beware!!!), there are really only a VERY small number of different filters out there. Most are just regional rebrands. The designs: ACDelco - This design is apparently used only by ACDelco, and is one of the better filters Champion - yep, same as the sparkplugs. Not bad, but not great. The filter element itself is awfully weak, and there's often a bit of rust in the cans. Sold under the names Car And Driver, Deutsch, and STP, probably others. Fram - This is really the only one to avoid at all costs. The Extra Guard and Double Guard, especially...but all three have the same basic flaw of cardboard endcaps instead of metal. They're sold as Pennzoils and Quaker State, among others. Purolator - the author lists this as second only to ACDelco. Good construction, but an odd string tied around the filter element is sometimes too tight and runs the risk of rupturing the element. They're sold as Motorcraft, PowerFlo, ProLine, among others... Wix - right behind Purolator and ahead of Champion. It's basically got the same advantages/disadvantages as the ACDelco, but at a higher price. Mobil1 - much more expensive than the others, but of course, the best. Basically a modified Champion with a vastly improved filter element and stronger case. ------------------ Project 1970 - soon to be seen at http://milhouse.treylis.org:81/

Anyone ever run the K&N filters? Anyone ever tested one? Just wondering how they compare to the other ones mentioned.

I have run K&N oil filters on my *vehicles*
for quite some time now. They are the same as the mobil-1 filters (look identical side by side) except the K&N filters have a nut welded to the bottom which makes the filter difficult to sit upside down when full of oil, I usually order several at once from summit. Both the mobil-1 and K&N use a synthetic membrane/filter media. But at the same note, I run Amsoil 10W-30 synthetic oil too. recently replaced a valve cover gasket at 109,000 miles, the underside of the valve cover was super clean. I do agree to stay away from FRAM filters too, made way too cheap. But in the end, it all comes down to personal preference. For me, its a toss up between mobil-1 and K&Ns, only go with K&N cause I get em cheaper thru summit than locally!
