towing hitch install

does anyone out there have hitch on their truck. i have the bed off mine and am looking at the frame, there appears to be bumper extensions (not very thick) and the c-channel frame is a good 10" behind this. where do you guys mount the hitch?! to make matters worse the dual exhaust follows the fram rails straight out the back. it is a lond bed 72 with leaf spring rear suspension. i was hoping to find a comparably wide hitch and weld and bolt it on. i could reroute the exhaust if needed. ive got a 16ft trailer i need to tow.

Re: towing hitch install

many vendors have hitches available ---a late model 1/2 ton 4wd with the frame mounts fabbed/relocated to mount inside the rails would solve your problem. In fact my setup from a 2003 1/2 2wd solves it also on my 67. I have pics at home if I remember. 8-)

Re: towing hitch install

I'd be interested in seeing the pics also. I'm planning on a hidden hitch and need to know what recycled hitches work.

You might ask 1978steven for his completion as a complete hidden.

Re: towing hitch install

I found a hitch on a 3/4 ton BB longbed in a salvage yard. I bought it thinking I could install it on a shortbed. The problem is the leaf spring mounts on the shortbed are in the way. This hitch mounts or is bolted to the inside of the frame rails and comes out under the license plate.I was thinking of welding a plate at a 90 degree angle to the frame rail plates and mounting either to the top or bottom of the frame rail. The hitch is sitting on the floor of the garage. I could take a picture if you are interested in seeing how it looks.
