Talking TH400 Behind a 4.3 V6

I pulled the dead 4.3 out of my 86 GMC today and discovered it was mated to a TH400. It made my day but that seems like a strange combination, especially in a swb 1/2 ton.

It kinda makes up for the junk lower a-arm I also discovered. I have a set of lowered spindles and a recently re-bushed set of a-arms laying around, so it looks like the engine swap will morph into a engine and suspension swap.

Re: TH400 Behind a 4.3 V6

It might be a TH-375 it uses fewer clutch's and plates than the TH400. Its used behind small v8 with lower power out put and some v6's. It has the same output shaft as a TH350. It does have the TH400 case and internals but its not as hd at a TH400 or a TH475. There should be a tag on the passenger side close to the governor plate. I have an 87 TH-375 that came from a G10 or G20 van with a 4.3 v6. On the plate it has LS on the left side then an A on the right side and it will usually have the year somewhere on there as well. If you want I can decode the transmission tag if you want. I can also send you a picture of the tag if you would like also.

I'm starting to see more and more of those transmissions lately. There is a lot of them in around mid 87+ Vans and Trucks.

Re: TH400 Behind a 4.3 V6

Thanks for information. I will take a look at the data plate tomorrow. A few sites I found, said TH375 will be cast on the underside of the tailshaft housing. How does the TH375 compare to TH350 as far as strength?

Re: TH400 Behind a 4.3 V6

I would say it would be on par with a th350 or better. I'm thinking on the better side. A stock th400 is pretty stout and really that is pretty much what it is but detuned. It has a smaller output shaft th350 size vs the bigger th400. It has a few less clutches and plates so that will reduce the holding power some. I don't think it would have any problem behind a decently built 350.

I have found on the newer th375 it isn't cast into the tailshaft. The book that I have said they where first made for passenger cars. But it doesn't give very much information about them.

How long is your tailshaft housing cover? Is it long and some what oval shaped?

It could be a 400. That's what mine had in it.

TH400 behind a 4.3L was an option.
