Post differences in 1 or 2 pc driveshaft?

my one piece driveline has broke twice from rubbing on the carrier bearing housing, the first time cracking the case on my turbo 400, and this time the case on my brand new 700r4. so i think im switchin back to the 2-piece and am wondering what kind of changes to expect. thanx in advance

well i think it might be because i lowered my truck, but im not sure, i know the first one was a little unbalanced and very wide but this one was two months old and much narrower and had plenty of clearance. two weeks ago there wasnt a single sign of any metal to metal on the driveshaft. so it seems like it was sudden

I've thought about changing to a 1 piece shaft (I have a 71'C20) and I was under the truck tonight and trying to figure out if the single shaft would hit against where the carrier bearing housing currently is on a bumpy roadway. The carrier bearing seems to be the weak link in my drivetrain. Also, what is a good donor vehicle for a single shaft.

Cool

I don't understand all the problems with the two piece drive shafts on these trucks that I keep hearing about. I have one and lowered 2" in front 3" in back. Installed 700-R4, cut almost 1" out of drive shaft front half for the difference in transmissions, moved the trans. crossmember back, had all of the universal's replaced and keep them greased, and had it balanced, and have got over 150,000 miles out of it. I have never had a bit of trouble with it.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

yeah i heard that the two piece takes a little torque away, or was it the one piece? i forgot. i guess theres also a little less vibration with a two piece. any input on the pros and cons between the two?

My '69 short stepside has a one piece driveshaft but I have no idea what it was from as it was in it when I bought it.

I had to notch out the carrier bearing mount area quite a bit myself. When I would try to haul anything, I could hear the driveshaft hitting.

wow, glad I found this. My donor frame is missing the 2 peice carrier. Its from a '69 or 70, I do beleive the rearend #s said '69. At any rate.. it was a 6 cyl with a manual and a 3.73 open rear, could it be that the carrier was removed with the driveshaft (considering this truck was a parts truck and had been pretty much raped of everything BUT the frame) or did they come this way at all?

I'm doing a 2/4 drop on mine. haven't gotten anything in it as far as drivetrain yet... but if its gonna be a problem I may hafta switch to 2 peice I dont want to, from my understanding you can lose about 10ft lbs of torque via that 2nd universal.. not sure tho.

You could get swb trucks with a one piece shaft. I have seen 2. Mine, and an all original '67 inline/4 speed farm truck. It was a short step Chevy. (both of them coil susp)

was this a rarity? this truck was too a farm truck, heh, I can see the battle damage.. YOU DONT PULL UP TREES WITH CROSSMEMBERS! lol I had to replace my back crossmember cos it appeared to have been yanked by a chain or rope. Along with the unusual.. mulch deposits under a few choice frame components (mainly the rear spring pads that are rivetted to the frame) I'm 100% it was a farm truck :P

Well, you know.. the 1 peices were inteded for stock ride heigh.. it very well could be the drop thats causing the problme. You dont think you could make perhaps some sort of home-made bushing kinda thing that fits in the crossmember's opening?

Even loaded, you shuldn't have any trouble...They were intended to be way overloaded, so the shaft should still clear.

yeah i dont think i should have any problems either, but i do. i dont know, maybe my rearend is going out and put some kind of weird pull on the shaft causing it to start twerking. who knows. but i was cruising at about 67-72 mph (about 2200 rpms) and had been for about ten minutes when it happened.
but i dont think im going to take another chance on it so ill probably just switch to two piece. the local parts store stocks the carrier and im just going to look for a two piece at a wrecking yard or off of here for my driveshaft guy to modify. i picked up my new 700 core for $100. the tranny shop said they can just switch all the parts from the two month old one to the new one. at an addition all charge of course.

I was told by a local driveline shop, that they can do a 73" shaft,if it is at least 4" dia tube, but they said they really didnt like making them that long,as they tend to whip,& will eventually fail. My longhorn has the good 2pc setup(slip yolk in the middle),& the owner of the shop told me I would be better off to leave it like that.....guess he didnt need my money bad enough to "steal" it!.........69

I put a 1 piece 4" dia. drive shaft in my '67 Shortbox, which is lowered 4" in the back. I've never had any rubbing problems. In fact, it looks like it was made to be this way.

The problem with the carrier bearings is improper alignment, the rubber cushion getting pushed to one side. Either by not getting it staight, (it can be twisted just a bit) or if the motor or trans mounts are sagging or the motor/trans is not straight in line. U-joints need to be in good shape too.

I've had a one-piece ever since I had a TH400 put in over two years / nearly 20,000 miles ago, and zero rubbing problems. I don't know if the guy who installed it hogged out the crossmember, though. Lowered 2.5" front, 4" rear.

If you are going through C-bearings, check to see that your tranny and engine are mounted straight, then get your surrent 2 pc shaft ballanced and ensure it is straight. That is about all I can see that would cause this kind of trouble.
