all you need is skin and a T shirt to stop it..
How do you stop an out of control wire wheel doing 20000 rpm? Squeeze it between your arm and your belly. You can do it! You don't want to, but you can.....
Then shut it off. It wasn't really the plan but it skipped off the work, skipped off the shock bracket, skipped off a cross member and that's when I decided to get ahold of it..... Can't imagine someone getting it caught in their hair! Makes me mad but short of putting it in a vice and turning the truck and parts over it, I guess I just have to hang on better..... Neat racing stripe pictures below if you want to see.....

Re: all you need is skin and a T shirt to stop it..
hahahaahahahahah I know I am not looking forward to it again! I was like ...."HOLY CRAP... what the HEII was that!" And by then, I had it in a headlock.
I was amazed at how badly the wheel was damaged and all twisted out of whack (and it was a twisted one to start!) - Took a minute to get it unwound from my shirt! ANOTHER lesson learned...well, two actually - the first being not to do this stuff when naked!.....

Re: all you need is skin and a T shirt to stop it..
been there, done that! heh, yeah, i had the misfortune of experiencing the same thing. people'd call me "ig'nant" for this, but i tend to work in the shop w/flipflops on if there's no heavy lifting involved. i was doing this one weekend with shorts and flops and polishing down a manifold and WHACK, dropped the drill w/wire wheel on my shin, then bounced onto my foot and ... ugh.
you know what else really sucks? i was running the weedeater like a genius with flip flops on not too long ago and ... you know how when you get up on a pole or tree w/a weedwhacker and it wraps around the pole in a crazy way kinda like how dogs can freakishly get peanut butter out of a kong toy? well, it wrapped around my foot and lower leg like this turned purple in less than 5 secons and the blood blisters took weeks to go away. in the years i've been working this way (in flops), i've never had anything like this happen that i remember. strange it just started in the past year or two. guess i'm becoming more of a klutz as i get older....

I've had the wire wheel gimme a tourniquet with my shirt before. Those and angle grinder wheels take skin off your hands QUICK! Ouch, you got tore up. A least it didn't catch on the front of your pants.

Re: all you need is skin and a T shirt to stop it..
Please be more careful guys. I used to be a machinist and had to push the emergency stop button on a guy whose hair got caught in a CNC lathe! It ripped out literally half the hair on his scalp. Was just starting to grow back about 6 months later. He's lucky to be alive. This was the same machine that killed a guy the year before.

That's going to leave a scar! Great conversational piece.
Cute girl: "How'd you get that scar?" Luvlegs: "I had a wire wheel, I mean a mountain lion in a headlock." (Bad poker face commercial) Stay safe everyone. Jay

Re: all you need is skin and a T shirt to stop it..
I don't think there are many people who work with wire wheels on a regular basis who haven't done that!
I always wear a thick hoodie when I'm wire wheeling, cause I hate getting stuck with the wires that come flying off all the time. One time the thing jumped, and I caught the buisness end in the gut, lol! Wrapped me right up, but it stalled the machine, and didn't even leave a mark on me. Nice hole in my hoodie now, and those little wires certainly have good aim to go right into that hole all the time :P

Re: all you need is skin and a T shirt to stop it..
right about when something like that happens I tell myself "ok, time to put down the powertool and have a beer"
One day I was helping a friend of mine on his house, he had an old ass circular saw he was using.... cut a 2x4 and set it down on the table, the old rusted spring didnt return the safty and it shot off the table and accross the porch until it got un plugged. Youve never seen two white guys move so fast!!!!

Re: all you need is skin and a T shirt to stop it..
I wasn't as lucky, mine was an 8" angle grinder with a grinding wheel on it. got to close to my work and when it kicked back on me I stopped it with my stomach. Funny thing about getting cut by grinders it takes foever for it to bleed (duh). I watched my guts all the way to the hospital. Needless to say you don't have to tell me to be careful when I'm grinding anymore.

Glad you are ok. But I have a question: Why didn't you just unplug the grinder instead of getting all scratched and stove up?

I have been a machinist for over 35 years now and believe me if a machine killed a guy a year ago and a guy got his hair caught in the same machine, there is something seriously wrong at that shop!!!!!!!

Re: all you need is skin and a T shirt to stop it..
i was recently wire wheeling my frame, took off the cup and put on a brand new knotted wheel to get in some places i couldn't get with the cup. laying on my back on a creepertrying to get around the shock mounts, the grinder with wire wheel got away, nad racked me ran up across my belly and finialy came unpluged when it got to the inner side of my elbow and the wheel stoped spinning and the grinder took over on beating my ass. lesson learned-- use my milwaukie grinder{paddel switch} when using a wire wheel in a tight area and use the elcheepo for grinding discs only them things will beat the snot outa you quicker than mohamad-alie
