Proper Way To Remove Steering Arm????
Is there an easy way to remove the steering arm on a Dana 44?
I heated mine and pounded on it with a hammer until I was tired and the taperd bushings finally came loose. I have another one to remove and would rather not go through that exercise again.

You need a heavy short sledge. A hammer will only frustrate you. Remove the nuts and soak the conical bushings in penetrating oil overnight, then get mad at something and take it out on that steering arm!

You need to get the conical bushings out first. Use a punch to strike on the slit and work them out. Hitting the arm without removing them just wedges them on tighter.

Re: Proper Way To Remove Steering Arm????
the arm came off my D44 in under 10 minutes....Soaking the studs/cones is key, but its where you hit the arm and in what direction that gets the arm off quick.
Most will assume that hitting up on the arm is going to work the cones out. It won't. You need to take a small sledge and strike DOWN on the arm on the curve of the arm (right in the middle of the "C" shape). By hitting down in that spot it makes the arm want to pivot on the axle, forcing the opposite end UP. This dislodges the last cone to the rear of the truck. A few good smacks and it should start working it's way up. Get the cone up high enough to grab the cone with a pair of big pliers and slowly unscrew the cone out by rotating it. Once the first cone is out, commence beating on the arm until the middle cone starts up. Repeat with the pliers and then again with the hammer to get the last cone out. I know it sounds backwards, but I wouldn't have belived it if I hadn't seen it. I kid you not my arm (factory installed for 30years!) came off in 10 minutes. I've seen a buddy of mine (before I knew this trick) hammer on the steering arm for 2 days and not get it off. It Works!

Re: Proper Way To Remove Steering Arm????
This question comes up pretty regular and a lot of people hurt themselves and ruin a few truck parts. Remove the nuts. Get a socket that is larger than the conical washer. Place socket on the top of arm over the washer. Strike down on the socket with your BFH. The impact will shock, jar, vibrate (insert your favorite term) the conical washer right out of the steering arm. Repeat two more times for the other two washers and you are finished. This requires no heat, WD or PB. If you don't believe me go out and try it and come back and call me a liar. This is how we got the one off my K10 and I have suggested to several people on this board but I have yet to hear back from anyone who has tried it. It's the same principle as removeing a steering wheel with two hammers (no puller available). Back the nut off the steering shaft a little. Place one hammer (BFH) on the nut, strike it with another (BFH), and the steering wheel will fall off in your lap. On stubborn ones you might have to put a little pressure on the wheel with your knees but most will fall right off. Good Luck guys! And remember don't force it, get a bigger hammer!
