rebuild alternator

when you have a alternator that no longer charges, is it possible for a guy at home to repair it? if so what is needed or what needs to be replaced?

Re: rebuild alternator

Usually just the diode trio and brushes. Some kits come with bearing as well. Its cheaper than buying a new one or paying someone else to do it. Most come with instructions as well. You can also upgrade to higher amp output, but I wouldn't recommend going very high as it will affect performance. You'll have to rev the engine higher at startup to get it to start charging. Most parts stores sell the rebuild kits. Good luck and show us pics when you do it! Jeff.

Re: rebuild alternator

really depends on type of alternator used // are you sure it's not the regulator if using the original system???

Re: rebuild alternator

not sure, it has an internal regulator. I was just out looking at the alt and I cannot find any numbers on it. Only the Delco-Remy and the number 8. Kind of hard to find a kit when I have no clue what the model numbers are? any ideas?

Re: rebuild alternator

Ok, with the internal reg alt. you can test them. On the back side there is a "D" shaped hole. Put a voltmeter on the battery, start the engine, insert a small screwdriver into the hole and apply a little pressure on the internal tab. Watch the voltmeter, if the voltmeter goes up, only the volt reg is NG. I believe the regs are all the same.
