Muffler location?

I am still thinking about making my exhaust exit just in front of the rear wheels, angling outwards with the tips just outside the body like an AAR cuda. I am wondering a couple of things before I do this, however:
-Where in the system do I put the mufflers?
-Will this harm my tires or paint?
-If I use flowmasters, will it be really loud inside the truck?

Here's a pic of what I'm thinking, on a car, but same idea.

Re: Muffler location?

This is going back a while but on one of my 72 blazer I had a 327/365 in my blazer with high compression anyway the old straight thrush shooting right out infront of the wheels. I cannot remember exactly but it obviously starts with the tailpipes. But if I remember correctly the tailpipes weren't a straight 45 out they went for a few inches then turned and came back. Like a Check Mark. Anyway with the motor I had in it it was extremely LOUD In the cab even with the window down at a light. When I sold it my freind put a much milder motor in it. It will be Loud

Re: Muffler location?

LUV2XCLR8, that comes out between the doors and the rear wheels correct? If so, how loud is it around town/on the highway? Is it tolerable, or would I be better off routing it right to the back? Thanks!

Here is how I have it on mine. I have cut the tail pipe down since this picture. Its not too loud unless I really want it to be. Then it screams

Mine goes all the way back out to the bumper and it is still pretty loud even with mufflers. Not sure what they are but everyone complements how they sound.

Re: Muffler location?

How loud the exhaust is is a function of A)what mufflers you have. B)Your Motor. and C) how much tailpipe you have after the muffler.

By the way, a guy here at work has an old AAR cuda and the mufflers are a little unique.....the exhaust entry and exit are right next to each other. Exhaust goes in, makes a 180 and exits on the same end. Out of the muffler, the pipe makes a quick turn toward the outside of the car behind the door. The mufflers are located just ahead of the rear axle (where the back seat forms a rise in the floor).

Anyway, remember that there's a difference between noise and sound. Sound=healthy V8 w/a nice cam.
Noise=Honda civic w/ fart-can mufflers.

Re: Muffler location?

My exhaust looks a lot like BowTieMans, straight from headers to crossover to turbos, and then angle out to exit before the rear wheels. It is all 1 welded unit that can be removed in one piece. In the pic below, I have the ends cut off because they were big 3" glasspacked chrome tips that rusted. The bent angles are different because they were scrounged pipe from another system. The crossover fits in the recess under the tranny crossmember. Also, the inputs from the headders are not equal legnth because the headders werent

Re: Muffler location?

I have basically the same setup on my truck with 18" glasspacks. About 1ft of 2" pipe comes off the ramhorns, then 2 1/4" was welded to that. The glasspacks are at the very end of the system with 2 1/4" turndowns. They don't stick out the side of the bed though, the turndowns exit right under the front of the bed and are turned to the side. It's really loud, I set off car alarms all the time when I drive it down town. All those buildings make the loud rrrrrraaaaaaaappppppppp sound echo, it draws a lot of attention. Some guys don't like loud exhausts but I do!

Re: Muffler location?

I have Super 40's 3" dual manderal bent with a 2 1/2" H pipe. Mufflers are right behind the trailing arm crossmember (it's a leaf truck) 90 out in front of the wheel. It's actually not loud inside the truck if you keep it under 3000 rpm. I can hardly hear it with the windows up. It is loud out side. But I am happy with the sound of the system.

Re: Muffler location?

Thanks guys! Last question, has anyone had any problems with it screwing up their paint or tires? I'm worried about the heat more than the soot, but am hoping I should be OK.

Re: Muffler location?

it gets a little dirty but the truck will need a wash by the time the exhaust ever make that big of a mess.

I'd be more concerned about exhaust fumes coming into the cab with the window down at stoplights. If your truck is to be a daily driver with the windows down I'd consider that.

I hate to be a but to me the only place for the exhaust is out the back.

Re: Muffler location?

Mine go all the way out the back. The pipes are tucked up there pretty well. I set it up so that from the rear, you can just see the last 1/4" of the pipe below the bumper. You don't even notice em unless you're behind the truck in a dusty parking lot. Then you see a really cool cloud of dust getting puffed up from the 2 spouts.

Re: Muffler location?

Try doing that with 3" tube and a 6" rear drop. That would be fun !
