Help !!

i"m wrecking this 90 Suburban ( took what I wanted and a wrecker bought the rest) and I want to put this steering wheel on my 72 with tilt. Does anyone know how to get the metal piece ( the one with the X ) off .. I been playing with it for 3 days now and I'm baffled.

Re: Help !!

There is a tool for doing that but I can usually do this. the steering wheel lock plate is held on there by a little spring steel ring in a groove on the steering shaft. if you push the lock plate down and look at the middle you can see the ring it has a split in it I can usually push the plate down with one hand and use a pick tool or small screwdriver to then remove the metal clip. It will come right off after that

Re: Help !!

That plate in question, push it down hard. It is spring loaded, there is a type of split ring holding it on just above it on the shaft. Once you push it down, you will see it, A little screwdriver or a needlenose pliers will get the split ring off.

Re: Help !!

I believe I have one of the lock plate compressors around for that job. Taking it apart is actually easier than putting it together if you don't have the tool. You can borrow mine if needed or you can get em at Princess Auto.

Re: Help !!

bought the tool you need for about $6 at the parts store. BTW, why do you want to take the plate off? No need to for steering wheel replacement, your already there.

Re: Help !!

Thanks everyone for the help. Stingray thanks for offering to lend me the tool. Ratfreak the reason I need the canceller (hoping it will work on my truck) is that there isnt one in my truck now and hasnt been since I bought it 5 years ago. Anyway I did try to get it off last night but I couldn't quite get it .. I'll try again today and if I cant the wrecker is coming tonite for the rest of the Burb..
This wrecked Burb worked out great for me. I ended up with a 700R with 25000 miles on it since a pro rebuild ( Stingray, at Hub Automatic) that I will be putting in my truck. I gotta do something to get some gas mileage....

Re: Help !!

You don't normally need the canceler on that column. Use the canceler from the column you put the wheel on. Longhorn Man had a FAQ thread on this. Do a search.

Thank goddness you survived. Saw the bruises. Keep on safe truckin - Bob
