how rare is a 2wd with a 396?

Hey all,

I just found out that I maybe able to get my hands on a 68 that originally had a 396. the motor has been pulled, and is being horded by this guys brother, who has had it sitting on the floor of his storage area for decades, all but forgotten. I guess he has no intention to sell it, but I think if I got my hands on this truck, I would have to get the 396 too since it is the exact motor out of the truck. I figure with enough cash in hand, I could get this guy to reconsider.

My question is, just how much would you be willing to fork out for this motor? I dont know if its all that rare to find a 2wd with a BB, and if its really worth forking out big bucks to getmy hands on the OG motor.

If its a 1/2 ton SWB its fairly rare, if it's a 3/4 ton it's not as rare.

Re: how rare is a 2wd with a 396?

According to production #'s for 1968 3/4 ton V8 there were 62,731 units sold,
and 1/2 ton v8 there were 190,413 units sold. The 396 big block, 327/307 small block were options. so its hard to tell how many are out there but it could be possible that since there were more 1/2 ton V8's sold there could be more big block 1/2 tons out there than 3/4 ton. But then again more than likely you would have wanted a bigger engine in a 3/4 ton. Its a toss up One of my buddies dad bought brand new in 1969 a 1/2ton 2wd shortbed stepside with a big block which he still has. I guess anything is possible. Just some interesting information for ya.

Re: how rare is a 2wd with a 396?

If it is a true canadian truck, you have a good shot. But if it was built and sold in the U.S. then forget it. There are no numbers for GMC trucks, let alone when you add up the options.
