disc brake conversion
hi all, i searched the forum but didn't find the answer for this. i have a parts truck (1972 5-lug) that has disc brakes and want to put them on my 1969 truck, can i just replace the spindles or do i have to replace the a-arms too. i have already removed the whole assembly from the parts truck(unbolted crossmember and rolled the whole thing out from under the parts truck). it would be easeir to just replace the spindles i think. any comments?
thanks steve |

Re: disc brake conversion
Youir existing a-arms are fine. You will have to install the 72 upper and lower ball joints. You will also need the center link and tie rods from the 72. Youir 69 center link and tie rods will not work. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Re: disc brake conversion
Heck, if you have the crossmember out of one already, just pull the crossmember out of the other one and swap the entire assembly. I believe you will only need to create one additional bolt hole on each side.
Someone that has done this will chime in and fill in my missing details, I am sure!

Re: disc brake conversion
I'm getting ready to do this. I am swapping the entire crossmember. The 67-70 a-arms are different then the 71-72. I don't know if it does make a difference or not, but I am not taking the chance.
I think you only have to drill holes for the 73 and up crossmembers. I am not at the point of putting mine in yet, but IIRC the 71-72 is a direct swap. Mike

Re: disc brake conversion
I believe the only diff. in the arms is the tabs for the brake hoses. I put disc brake spindles on my 69 with no problems. As stated before you will have to use 72 ball joints and steering parts.

Re: disc brake conversion
thanks guys, the only thing about putting the whole thing under the truck is that i will have to pull the engine. if i got to i will but i would like to keep it in just so i can start it and move it around.

Re: disc brake conversion
Swap the whole thing out. I went the spindle route, major PITA. I think you can get away with lifting the motor with a cherry pick and not yanking the whole thing.
