Sparks!!!!

Something is grounding out on my shift linkage where it connects to the frame and causing a lot of sparks. Looks like someone is under there welding. Engine has a good ground, I think. This just started not too long ago. Any ideas?

Re: Sparks!!!!

the wiring for the rear lights runs along the frame right there but you would think it would blow a fuse...

Re: Sparks!!!!

I must say Gary, I can't think of anything but the tailight wiring that runs down past there...

Does your truck have a 7 pin connector with it's own heavy gauge power wire running off a circuit breaker? Something has gotta be shorting out, but I can't think of what...

Re: Sparks!!!!

Thing is, where it is sparking there aren't any wires. I'm leaning towards a bad ground on the starter. It only does it when you try to crank it.

Re: Sparks!!!!

The starter would have been my first guess as well. Especially with the amount of sparks you say you see. If it's not the starter wire, maybe it's the starter itself.

Re: Sparks!!!!

The starter grounds through the block so I would recheck and maybe clean the ground from the block to the frame there should be one from the battery to the block and one from the block to the frame and one from the body to the frame. When you crank it the only ground the block is finding is through that linkage to the frame.

Re: Sparks!!!!

The only one I can see from the block goes to the firewall.

Re: Sparks!!!!

Run a good heavy gauge ground from the block to the frame and clean the one from the block to the cab and your problem will probably disappear . I agree with oldtruckfanatic , it is going to ground where it can and that happens to be the linkage . Rubber mounts will isolate the engine and trans . Frank

Re: Sparks!!!!

I'll try that, but I think I may have already fried my starter.

Re: Sparks!!!!

THe starter will overheat trying to ground like that but not always. Make sure the ground from the battery to the block is clean at both ends and put a good ground from the block to the frame. When they arc like that they make that black burning on the metal. Sooner or later it can no longer ground through the arc marks and then the starter won't work. Hopefully thats all it is.

Re: Sparks!!!!

Cleaned all of the grounds and ran a new one from the block to the frame. That seemed to do the trick. Now I hear my starter starting to drag. I may have too many shims in it.
