I6 to V8 Swap
Ok, I swear that I've searched the board and I can't find anything on putting a 350 with TH350 into my '67 C-10.
I finally got the truck in serviceable condition, but the I6 just smokes 'impressively' as my friend puts it. I have access to a supposedly 'smoke free' 350 with TH350 attached, and just need to know what motor mounts to look for, what trans mounts I'll need and if the drive-shaft will need to be altered. Currently the truck has a 250 with a 3 speed, which after my test drive yesterday seems like either it is not synchronized in first, or the synchros are just bad. Anyway any help and links to some documentation would be appreciated, I'm going to try to get this done in the next couple of weeks. Thanks!

Re: I6 to V8 Swap
i can't help on the motor mounts, but you will need an automatic tranny xmember and i'm just the guy you need to talk to b/c i have a spare, it's totally been refurb'd and i am not using it. i'm about 25 mins away, right by the capitol building (6 blocks from the zoo in the Grant Park area). zip 30312 if you want to mapquest.
i got this thing from another forum member, TruckGuy, from KS. i tore it down, bought all new hardware, DA'd off all the rust and repainted. if you really wanted to do something killer, you could have it sandblasted and powdercoated. oh yeah...as for what you need to do.... see this gallery for engine/tranny removal: http://satellitehead.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=3 first page here covers getting that manual xmember out: http://satellitehead.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4 i'll let this xmember go cheap - same as i paid for freight, won't charge you for the cleanup labor or anything. pic is here: http://satellitehead.com/images/68ch...swap%20017.jpg and here: http://satellitehead.com/images/68ch...swap%20018.jpg good luck!

Re: I6 to V8 Swap
Shifty,
Send me a PM regarding the xmember. That would be the nicest piece on the truck if I got it! I need to get the 'new' motor and trans and go over it to see if its worth the effort, but things don't look too complicated. Thanks for the info and pics!

Anyone? This has to be a common swap.

Re: I6 to V8 Swap
From what I remember, you can use your I6 Motor frame mounts if you intend to put the motor in the "rearward" mounting position......where the I6 is right now. If you want to move it forward to the next position, you will need some new tower mounts.
Once I had my engine mounted, (I choose to put it in the I6 position so I could re-use the towers I had), I installed the tranny X-Member and then had my driveshaft cut and welded to be one piece from the trans-tail to the rear-end. A rather simple swap really. |

Re: I6 to V8 Swap
Ok, so I can use the existing frame mounts, I just need to get the corresponding motor mounts for the 350? That sounds simple enough (right). Thanks for the info.

Re: I6 to V8 Swap
I am using the 6 cyl. stands in my truck with no problems. The engine just sits further back toward the firewall.

Re: I6 to V8 Swap
correct me if im wrong, but clearance issues aside isnt it better to have your motor mounted further back on the frame as far as handling is concerned?

Re: I6 to V8 Swap
The standard distributor is not a problem. The HEI is close, but will still fit. It's close.....but will clear. Yes, get you some new motor mounts. They bolt to the block and then the mount to the I6 motor stands.
I love my V8. Its not a race engine or anything....just a good daily driver with custom duals and flowmasters. Sounds great, runs great, and is a HUGE improvement over the I6 and the ole' 3 on the tree ! ! |
