Drip Rail Maddnes

I've been working on my drip rail. So far I've stripped out the old sealant to bare metal, cleaned and etched, and coated it with 2 coats of Por-15. There were still some deep grooves so I thought I'd apply apply some "Por Patch" the thick version of Por-15 from a tube. Mistake. That suff bubbles even when it's applied not more 1/16 of an inch thick! I was wondering if any of you have had a similar problem. I'm thinking I should sand that stuff down and apply another coat or two of Por-15 then use Por Epoxy (or an epoxy that can stand heat and sun) as you would regular drip rail sealant like 3m Fast and Firm (which seems to crack out in the hot Arizona sun)

Any advice from you guys who have expereince with this stuff would be appreciated

Shave the drip rails on that baby and you will get rid of that problem, plus have a very clean looking cab.

well, you shouldn't be using POR-15 there anyways, it is not intended to be used where direct sunlight will hit it, I am pretty sure it degrades the product or something. At least this is my understanding of that product.

Here's mine. I blasted it out, epoxy primed and used the 3M #8307 self leveling drip rail sealer. It turned out much better than I expected.

I went to a local paint house and bought the correct 3M product. It was not cheap. They make a applicator, but it wouldn't pay for the one time use.

Botie, I bet you could not restore my truck as well as yours, let me know when I can send it. You will thank me for allowing you to have some more practice lol. I am impressed by your work everytime.

That's about what I did too..... The 3M #8115 panel bond adhesive works great and it won't crack. I call this stuff Truck-In-A-Tube.....

They have a paint store on the street after Banks going east on Cameron. That is where I bought what the body shop said to use, not sure on the part number.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I won't be shaving the drip rail because I'm partial to the classic look. Got some feedback from the Por-15 people. They claim that the Por-15 will discolor but not degrade in uv light. In any case, it's going to be under whatever I wind up using over it. I'm most likely going to use an epoxy, the Por Epoxy is good for 300 degrees, easy to work with or I'll see if I can get the 3M products locally- There's an auto paint & body super store near me. Then prime & paint.

Botietruck, I really think you need to try another one to make sure your method really works. I just happen to have one I could be persuaded to volunteer to let you use. Anything to help the cause of driprail repair!

After a little more research, I decided on 3M 8307 seam sealer as the better product. Does anyone know if that will adhere to POR-15 or should I get it back down to bare metal again?

Thanks for the compliments. I took the advise of someone else on the board and went to a local auto paint supply store and they were kind enough to let me use the applicator gun one time. You might also try a body shop.

Tommy & ScottH, Thanks for the gracious offer to restore your truck, but... since I am approaching 10 years on my truck, I better get this one finished first. I don't think the Mrs. would take to kindly to doin' that kind of stuff. Her honey-do list is growing. But...if I change my mind, you guys will be first.

did you apply the 8307 over the por 15 with satisfactory results?

zonaman, I would not apply directly over the por15 myself, I would prime over the por with whatever it is they recommend to go over their product and then let that dry, sand and then apply seam sealer over the primer.

Thanks! I ended up stripping it all out to bare metal, applying rust inhibiter, and then the epoxy. I noticed that my mysterious inside the cab leaks stopped after that! Botietruck knows his stuff!
