3 on the floor

i have a column shift 3 speed. untill i change drive train (400-5 speed) i would like to use a floor shifter. i heard all aftermarket shifters are junk. i want that (hurst) chrome flat blade with white ball look. does anybody have any ideas or know how on a quality piece? price? also important is a good sealing boot kit that looks and seals good. thanks everyone

I installed the hurst master shift kit...........very happy with it.

lokar is a automatic shifter company unless i am missing something on their site, i have seen them out at the sema show and their quality is tops, but i dont think they make manual shifters.i looked at the hurst master shift. its okay looking i just dont care for all the curve in the handel. how hard is the install? are the directions good?i understand tilt 4 speed columns are rare and hard to come by. what are you guys doing on the cheap. how do i know where to cut floor properly? dont want to butcher. thanks everybody

I have a hurst indy shifter. I like it...it's alot better then the old POS that was there. The only problem I had was the quick clip things they give you to connect the linkage to the shifter fell off after a mile. I used cotter pins and now no problems. The a hurst boot which I didn't put in right because it ripped on me. Other then that I think the Hurst shifters are fine.

The Hurst Indy is a nice product. It sits lower than I'd like to reach when inside and shifting it, but it works well!

thanks for pics. what are the differances between the indy and master shift? money seems about the same but master shift seems to be ordered more vehicle specific. iwant the best quality. thanks

I have one in my 70 like your talking about, My father installed it and it works GREAT. It isn't as short as the one in 68haywagon's post. I'm very happy with it and it seems to be just about the perfect height. I wish I could tell you more about it but I didn't install it. If you have any questions I'll try my best to help or ask my father.

Yea mine is a little shorter then I would like, but I got used to it. I can even grab gears fast enough to chirp 1-2 and sometimes even 2-3 with my inline 6

I had a Mr. Gasket on my truck (which I beleive is pretty much the same design as the Indy). IT worked great for a few months but for some reason the pins that transferred the shifter between R-1 & 2-3 would always stick in at both sides and I could not shift. Turns out the pins kept tapering. THe steel quality was jus treally cheap. So if you're going to invest in one of these, don't buy Mr. Gasket unless you expect to replace it in a few months.. or get that T5. The End.

You can get a van tilt colum, I don't think they came as a manual. I just bought on for my pickup, I am just gonna take off the automatic stuff and leave it like that just incase I decide to use an automatic later. I know longhorn man has one forsale. I had the Hurst Indy shift in my 70 until I went with an automatic. It worked great. I liked it much better than the column. I had no problems except you need to make sure you put locktight on the threads for the shift handle to linkage. Mine worked loose (I guess all those power shift with my 250 ), other than that no problems. I sold it to someone on the board and far as I know they are still jamming gears with it.

thanks every one. i am leaning towards the master shift. it does cost a lot more because of the install kit but seems to be more vehicle specific so should work better, plus you guys feel the indy is to short and the master appears to be taller for the trucks. am i right or wrong?

If you don't like the size of the shift lever, look at the Hurst catalog online. There is about 60 different lengths and sizes of levers that will bolt on to the shift linkage.

The truck I put the mastershift into has a bench seat and the shift knob is right at the edge of the seat with it all the way back. It is very comfortable for me, but might be different for others. Installation was pretty easy as the equipment comes with instructions, and there was a write up done that I used too.
