Red face What Ford/Lincoln Rear w/disc fit 67-72?

I was told that Lincoln 9" w/discs would fit my 67.
Does anyone know which models and which years fit?

Thanks

Re: What Ford/Lincoln Rear w/disc fit 67-72?

As I recall I used a 74 Licoln disc brake rear end in my 67. The bolt circle was a 5 on 5 and since I'd already converted the truck to 5 lug, it was a snap. Weld on the perches for your trailing arms or leaf springs as you like and you're about done. Check with any Hollanders manual at the wrecking yard and I'll bet they can point it out very quick. Be sure and get the 4 wheel disc proportioning valve too ! Good luck, Dean

Thanks for the info, I'm chasing a 70's Versailles rear end complete.

Anyone have any idea what one should cost?

My grandfather has a versilles that is just sitting and wasting away with the 9" and disc. How much better is it than the 3:73 posi I now have.

The versailles rear is narrower than the stock 12 bolt. The big Lincoln cars are the rears you want. This is a good thing, the big car rears are a lot cheaper. I've seen them go on flebay for less than $200.

The Versaille rear end is like a complete set of gold-plated hen's teeth to the street rodder guys.

It is the rear you want for your conversion. It comes with 5" x 5" bolt pattern AND the disc brake setup already on it. Most of the big Lincoln cars didn't have discs. So you would basically be where you are now, only with a 9 inch.

Some of the Continentals and Marks in the 70's had the disc rears (tow package??). They are within an inch or so of the truck 12 bolt width flange-to-flange. They are also 5x5 unlike the truck 9" rears.
That Versailles rear is great for someone that wants something a little narrower than stock (for trucks) or to put under a camaro/chevelle/nova/whatever.

Re: What Ford/Lincoln Rear w/disc fit 67-72?

Make sure you get everything with the Versailles rearend, as nothing is cheap for them. Calipers are high, rotors are high, brake lines are high..... you get my drift. You can put a lot of $$$$ into rebuilding one. Almost as much as buying an aftermarket rear disc brake kit. You may also want to check and see if you can even get the parts. I had a hard time finding them 10 years ago when I put one in my 35 Chevy coupe.

Something else to consider, it is a very heavy rearend. I'm sure quite heavier than a 12 bolt. This adds a lot of unsprung weight to the back of the truck/car. I could definitely tell the difference in my car.

Not trying to talk you out of it, just trying to give you a little info from my experience. They are a great rearend, heavy duty and tough as nails. But they do have some downside.

Rob

Re: What Ford/Lincoln Rear w/disc fit 67-72?

I havent spoken with him about it. The car is a peice in my opion, It is straight as can be, loaded to the gills but it's paint is in bad shape and when it was running it would cut off at the most inconvient time(in the middle of intersections)and not start up untill it felt like it. I know this because when I was 18 he gave it to me,after it did that a couple of times I gave it back.

Re: What Ford/Lincoln Rear w/disc fit 67-72?

I used a 75 lincoln Mark rear in my 67. You will have to cut off 4 of the six brackets that are welded to the nine inch, the two you want to keep are the two bottom ones that the ebrake cable goes thru. That way, you can use two rear driver side cables (from the lincolns) to hook up to the stock chevy truck cable coupler.

Also you will have to buy two new axle perches to weld to the rear to make it a bolt in for our trucks!!
As for the brake hose to the calipers, don't skimp, buy new ones.

Early Classics in Fresno CA has the perches, and you will also need to buy an adjustable panhard bar kit as the nine inch does not have to stud bolt on it to be able to use the stock chevy panhard bar....

As for what years, I think it is something like 1970 up to 1978 Lincoln Continentials and Marks (only difference being where the brake hose enters the brake caliper)
