Side Trim Clip Question

I want to put the lower side trim back on my 70, but many of the panels did not come from a truck with the trim holes pre drilled. I am also thinking about the uppper side trim also.

My question is I have ready that thereis now clips that use sticky adhesive, vice drilling the holes for the traditional style clips.

Does anyone have experience or feedback (vendors and buyers) about these new style "sticky" clips. The stciky stuff will save alot of work, but wondering about their durability.

i have not seen them but did see on ebay that you had a choice of clips from one of the venders there. i ordered all new upper and lower trim and am really hoping that it comes with adhesive clips as all my holes were welded closed by po, i think they will be tough to redrill but i've overcome greater hurdeles

I have used the adhesive trim clips on 4 of my last trucks. The first thing I do with the adhesive clips is to remove the adhesive strips they put on those clips. Then I go to oriellys and buy the high quality 3m trim adhesive that comes in a roll.I think it is about 3/4" wide. I cut the 1" or 3" pieces depending on upper or lower trim and apply it to clips. for the installation on the truck it's best to put on on a fairly hot day as it sticks better to the hotter metal. On the 4 trucks in the last 6 years I have only had 2 pieces come loose.

I installed as Solver did, and haven't had any problems. Unfortunately, I used all of my clips so I don't have any extra for you. I did see them in the LMC catalog though. So I do know you can buy them if need be.

Thanks incoma, I'm getting ready to order some, but I wasn't sure how good they were. It'll make things a lot easier for doing the trim on my truck without having to drill new holes.

Did you folks weld in your unused trim holes, or just put the clips over the old holes?

I used the clips with studs on my holes, and used the plastic stick clips where there wasn't a hole. One of my sets of holes aren't level, so the trim turned out cock-eyed. (spelling?) Be sure to use a level when you place the trim on the truck.

I didn't use the clips at all. I just got a big roll of the 3M trim adhesive and put it on the edge of the trim top & bottom.

I havent had much luck with the adhesive clips. After about 6-7 years, they started to come off. When I decided to remove the moulding, they came off pretty easy. I just dont think the adhesive tape is a long term idea.

You could take Solver's advice and apply a different adhesive tape to the clip. That might work better...

If you decide to use the adhesive tape I would recommend the 3m adhesive tape, they also make a small wipe that is an activator in a small white package and they are like a small piece of foam with some chemical on them. They work excellent. Since we have started using this at our shop not one molding has come back falling off.

When I worked at a tier one that made side trim for cars/trucks, we used the same 3m adhesive tape. The key for that tape as 72CSTC5 said, is to use the proper primer for that tape. We had about 5 different adhesive tape formulas, and each one used a different primer ....or maybe 3 different primers between the 5 tapes... All of the Tahoe and Suburban (GMT800) series trucks used tape to adhere the moldings. Now that I think about it, all of the trim we made used tape. The only way you're taking that trim off is if you're taking paint with it.
