Thinking about insatalling 'side exhaust'

I have been thinking about using a shielded side exhaust kind of like was on
some of the earlier corvettes. It would come out at the rear of the front
wheel and end near the back of the cab. Was wondering if ya'll had
any opinions on the nosie level, etc. This is on a 68 that I'm just starting
on. Will probably install a mild 350. Patriot exhaust products offer these in
different lenghts. Thanks, bob

probably not legal on a daily driver depending on where you live i know in missouri on a daily driver they are not legal exhuast has to exit 18 inches behind the cab. my dad had some on his 69 swb they were sweet

If NC is as lax on vehicle requirments as KY then they are probably legal, you are planning to run it past the cab and to exit right in front of the rear wheels aren't you, I think it would look sweet and sound sweet, but I like my exhaust pretty loud.

If you like glasspacks, nuff said. I had a pair on my 59 Apache when I was in HS, it was cool untill I got a new perspective on cool. They look good on vettes, but they will burn the crap out of you legs (I learned on a 68 BBC vette!) legal is probably going to require them to vent as close to the front of the rear tires as possible, anywhere near the cab and you'll be deaf in no time.

The federal requirements only reqire it to be past the rearmost opening door, and exited out from under the vehicle. the early 97 F-150 had a tail pipe in a similar location from the factory. Since your truck is not required to have cats, therefore you can place pipes anywhere you want (illegal to relocate a cat... considered tampering) it would be safe to assume they would be legal... however, if your state is anal about stuff like that, double check. But I'll pretty much say with 99% certinty, you''ll be ok.
Personally, i like side pipes. However, you have to do the whole truck up in a classic hot rod style (IMO) in order for them to look right.
I had planned to go that route with my old SWB.

for a truck, visible side pipes would be too long to look right. i run the exhaust in front of the rear wheels but they're not visible except for the tailpipe, and also i have cutouts below the door to run without mufflers.

you'd have to run a 3 inch pipe to make it look good in my opinion and are you planning on running a muffler? some companies like patriot exhaust or something makes a kit that is a side pipe hidden muffler, but they're short, for a car. it would be unique.

No side pipes on "GQ" but I do have it exiting in front of the rear
wheels, it's only rowdy when someone is parked next to me

all the side pipes I've seen had mufflers built in. Jeggs has an S pipe kit that makes them easy to hook up.

Hey Bob, Im here in Jacksonville NC and I stopped in at the local Advance Auto to pick up some things and ran into an old man with a 68 short bed step side with those pipes. He had it dropped, 50 series tires, and a beige, off white two tone paint job. It looked killer. He had the 5 inch pipes running down the side and turned out before the rear wheels. I loved it, even though I was not a huge fan of them before that day!

That would be the same as a truck wiper motor

Hey does anyone have pics of side pipes on one of our trucks? This sounds like it might look pretty cool on the 71, long way from that step but it never hurts to dream!

The heat shield on the 50" Patriot side exhaust is aprx. 36" long. I thought
about modifiying the rocker so that it has a more concave shape and tucking
it close to the cab. Maybe insetting the lower rear cab sheet metal so
the outlet would tuck closer to it. Sort of like the cab was made for it.

I'm thinking the heat shield would not look right if it was longer than the cab.
I guess the lower bedsides could be modified in the same way if a longer heat
shield was used. Thanks! bob

if its '71 or ealier you don't have to have any inspection of any kind in NC. so it will be legal. chris.
