my 69 c-20 w/leaf springs i believe has a dana 44 rear end..
how do i tell

not a d44, maybe a d60 in the rear but there was never a d44 8 lug rear.

on the bottom right casting web it will have a dxx cast into it.

the fact that the drums remove over the hub is d60, eatons you need to remove the hub to get to the drum guts.

Dana's have the number cast in them near the pumpkin, so it'll have a 60, cause like stated above 44 where not 8 luggers. The 44 would look just like the front diff on a 1/2 ton 4X4.

They put D44's in the front of 3/4 ton trucks too. They would be 8 lug.

True, but in this post we're talking about a rear axle, not a front axle. So to confirm, dana 44's were never offered in a rear axle configuration with 8 lugs, nor were they full-floating, but they were used in front 3/4 ton applications that were 8-lug. They were also available with 6-lugs in a front axle application, & are still manufactured, (esp. for jeep) with 5 lugs.

The dana 44 axle was the small block chevy of axles, they put them in EVERYTHING & as such there are a LOT of different configurations.

To the point of this post, it is likely, as trkklr77 said, that this rear axle is a Dana 60, as that was a pretty popular application for GM when these trucks were being made.

If you posted up a picture of the differential cover, it'll give us a pretty good idea of what it is as well.

But I do agree with trkklr77, it seems to be a Dana 60.
