question on cam vs springs
I just picked up a set of fresh 882 heads with a stock replacement valve springs from local shop. My question is... can I get away with a cam thats in the 440 lift range without coil bind. I believe the stock replacement cam is somthing in the .396/.400 lift. I don't think an extra .040 is going to hurt???
Ill check for coil bind but just looking for thoughts... The heads are going on a fresh flattop 355 and will end up in my 86. The 180,000 mile 305 is dead tired.

i had some 882's on my 355 1.94, 1.50 valves and 76 cc's well i ran a 268 cam from comp and had no problem i'm thinkin it was like .454 lift it worked fine however i wouldn't recommend going any bigger than that but it was a great camshaft

Chevy ran as much as .450/.460 lift on standard 3911068 valve springs, the same springs found on 2-bbl V-8's.

Thanks guys.. I mocked it up last night and all is well.
Hoping to drop it in next weekend. Im still waiting on headers and the carb shop.

You could actually run alot bigger cam with the stock springs. I have those heads on my roller 350 with a hot LT-4 cam. That pushes .525 lift with no probs. I went ahead and put in screw in studs, though, just to make sure I didn't knock one loose and may use stud girdles later to even out the tension a little.
