Frame and VIN help
I am working on a cab off resto on my 69 GMC and have some questions for the experts. VIN is listed as CS10DSA29510. I suspect that the "D" in that should actually be a number but not sure. Cab plate says SA29510 and this is also stamped on the frame(under the cab on top of the frame rail). There is also 9B847711 stamped on the top of the frame by the steering box. What does the 9B847711 mean? Inside of glovebox also confirms the VIN and list the wheelbase as 115". It list model as CS1570D. Can anybody help me make sense of these numbers? Also in looking at the frame with cab off, I noticed several strips that are welded vertically on the frame in between the cab mounts. They are in the same spot on both sides. Is this some sort of frame repair. I know that truck was initially a manual V6 and has since been converted to V8 Auto. My intial assumption was that someone had turned a LWB into a SWB but VIN confirms that this is a SWB truck. I am confused.

Re: Frame and VIN help
The numbers on the top of the frame by the steering box are also VIN numbers..
From the photos of the welds, it appears the front frame sections possibly have been replaced off of another truck. |

Re: Frame and VIN help
So you think it may have had frame damage to the front end so they put another front section in its place. Should both stampings on the frame match?

Re: Frame and VIN help
Yes, both numbers on the frame should match.

Re: Frame and VIN help
Yes, both numbers should match.. From the pictures it does appear that both frame rails have been replaced in the middle of the trans crossmember section forward.. it looks like they used a piece of frame for the "boxing plate" since it sits "on top" of the existing frame and is a bit narrower than the rest. Plus you can see that the welded on front section is also a bit narrower than the rear frame rails. IMO.. its proabably not much to worry about unless you had a run in with the DMV.. Although I would "lose" the front numbers somehow since they do not match the rest..

Re: Frame and VIN help
Quote:
CS10DSA29510 That's one way of doing the 69 GMC vin. C = conventional cab S = six cylinder 1 = 1/2 ton gvw OD =wide side box S = St Louis assembly plant A = 1969 model year 29510 is sequence number 67-69 vins in the GMC line are done this way in some instances where that letter A is for 69 could be a letter B for 68 and a C for 67. The model number breaks down to CS1570D C = conventional cab S = six cyl 57 = cab to rear axle dimension of 42 inches OD = wide side box. so the vin and model number combined say its a GMC 1969 wide side 6 cyl shortbox 1/2 ton. 9B847711 someone grafted a front section of another 69 on there from a truck what you show. Could be a GMC or Chev front piece section...cant tell by what's listed. the grafted front piece identifies as such 9= it was a 69 B= built in Balitimore 847711 is the sequence # Rod aka vin master

Re: Frame and VIN help
Any ideas why someone woudl graft a frame from one to another? I don't suppose that it is a huge deal. Is is worth it to continue working on this truck?

Re: Frame and VIN help
Probably hit in the front and twisted the frame up.
Wasn't so unusual to put another front section on. Anyway you can do an accident history. Probably wasnt available back when, but can be done here at least now with vehicles in the past ten years or so in this province.... note province not state...not sure how things are down below. I dont figure it was a chop shop deal because you say the vin tag, vin glove box, and the rearward frame all have the same number. The repair looks like it was done with some integrity to safety...so it's probably legit. Not hard to grind down the frame number..but a little harder to make a repair to the font section of the frame with that outside repair to the frame channel. Your call for a total resto.
