86 GMC Stepside Help
I am thinking of changing my Intake and Carb. As of now I have a stock casting intake and A Quadrajet carb (4BBL). My question. What is a good carb to use? This engine is stock and I don't want to put to much into the top end. I have been told that a Holley 650 double pumper is to much. What carbs are good from Holley and what carbs are good from Edelbrock?
As far as the intake, I was thinking edelbrock performer series. My truck is attatched. |

Re: 86 GMC Stepside Help
I bought a rebuilt quadrajet from Jet performance, and installed it on a factory aluminum intake that is identical to the cast iron one that came off the truck. The intake is not rare or special, just lighter. I see them in junkyards occasionally.
I was planning to go with an edelbrock intake and carb, but the cost convinced me not to. It is especially costly if you have cruise and A/C, and want everything hooked back up like I did. All of those brackets are expensive, and substantially raise the cost of switching to the Edelbrock carb. Slonaker |

I was told by many that a rebiuld won't last or perform like a new one. If I was to rebiuld my quad, how much time can I get out of it? Or should I just buy a new one? |

I have also heard that the Performer is a very good carb. I chose not to get one because of the extras I would have to buy to use it. If you don't have cruise or A/C, and you want a new aluminum intake anyway, it might be your best bet. Slonaker |

Re: 86 GMC Stepside Help
i had a weiand "stealth" intake and a 600cfm Edlebrock on an old truck of mine with a stock 350 and it made a big difference from the stock setup, but it ran good too....not over fueled, and not under fueled...i've also rebuilt tons of q-jets and as long as you don't let them sit so the gas dries out or goes bad...they will last a long time...the biggest problem with any carb. is the accelerator pump...in edlebrocks and Q-jets its basically a rubber plunger. when they sit in gas and then dry out(leaving it parked for a long amount of time) they get brittle and crack so then when the accelerator pump is pushed down the gas can get through instead of being pushed into the motor....on a Holley they are more of a diaphram and those too dry out in the same way....but when the gas goes back through a dried out accel. pump on a Holley it usually leaks or sprays back out onto the intake...
